STATEMENT ON COURT PROCEEDINGS AND RETRACTION OF THE PREVIOUS STATEMENT.

Following consultation with our legal counsel, we have resolved to unequivocally retract the previous statement issued. We acknowledge that the court order granted in favor of the applicants in December 2022 still stands. However, we disagree with the conclusions of the court and have brought a legal challenge to that court order.

Following the recent court hearing, we continue to pursue the matter on the normal court roll. We are applying for a court date. Given that the matter is sub judice, this is all we can update for comrades now. Further updates will continue as the matter unfolds in court and the rightful structure is ultimately identified.

As the students of South Africa and citizens generally, we are afforded one festive season every year, where we take a step back to reflect and spend time with friends and family. It’s on this note that SASCO would like to humbly wish you a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.

We would also like to urge all students to enjoy the festive season responsibly as it is known to be one with tragic losses and accidents.

SASCO Statement on court order

21 December 2022

We have noted the order tabled on the 20th December 2022, by the Honourable Judge Dlamini

The order comes after SASCO yet again saw itself in courts of law following the parallel Congress that convened at The Lakes Hotel recently.

After the matter was taken to court we took a conscious Decision following the counsel of the respective leaders, convocation and structures of our broad liberation movement that our glorious students movement is facing a political and organisational crisis and thus needs a political solution as opposed to legal solutions. We took this decision with great optimism that both parties would avoid a circuitous route of courts but would sit down and find political solution to the crisis which has engulfed our glorious movement, SASCO.

Consistent with above political context we resolved not to file opposing affidavits and further did appear before the high court to argue our case. Whilst we are still convinced that the courts are not a ground for political matters, we shall be meeting with our legal team to officially file an appeal of the order granted by the honourable Judge pending the envisaged political solution.

We call on all South African Students and broad South African society to not be deterred and remain steadfast. The fight for the soul of the organisation of Claude Qavane shall be won!

SASCO Post NEC Meeting Statement

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

16 December 2022

The South African Students Congress[SASCO] held its first plenary session of the 22nd National Executive Committee, which convened from the 9th to 13th December in Nelspruit, Mpumalanga Province. The meeting received a political update by the president which reflected immensely on the political atmosphere in the sector which we organize, domestic & global balance of forces, draconian policies that hinder academic excellence, development & empowerment of students. An organizational update which stressed the need to take stock, rebuild and strengthen the organization for the betterment of the entire student’s populace.

The NEC meeting reflected on the worrying state of our TVET Colleges, their infrastructure, archaic curriculum and their general management. The NEC reiterated SASCO’s call to strengthen and reposition TVETs as institutions of choice, and centres of a much needed skills revolution in a country that is in development and constantly outsourcing skilled expertise at the face of its daunting economic state. We call upon the Department of Higher Education and Training to accelerate the revamping and development of our dire infrastructure and a complete reform of their curriculum to ensure a platform for innovation, scientific and technological advancements. Furthmore the NEC calls upon the Minister Blade Ndzimande to swiftly act on the incompetence of college managers and councils that are seemingly at the center of hindering progress and development due to autocratic management, maladministration and rampant corruption. We call for the immediate removal and prosecution of all managers and councils alleged to be involved in corrupt deeds and those with standing allegations of r**e and physical abuse.

The NEC reiterated its commitment to ensuring campuses remain safe spaces, free of abuse, discrimination and intimidation of all kinds. In giving life to “SASCO is your first friend on campus” The NEC noted with concern, the alarming statistics of Gender Based Violence and Femicide related cases that occur on and off our campuses. In an attempt to shed light and bring awareness the NEC resolved on a launch of a SASCO Intersectional Network in an effort to pledge solidarity with the LGBQTI++ community and work to break the stigma, create a safe, conducive and inclusive learning environment for all regardless of class & sexual orientation.

The NEC as empowered by the Supreme document appointed National Working Committee members:

1. Athenkosi Mabona
2. Nkululeko Sithole
3. Nosiphiwo Ngqunge
4. Happiness Malatji
5. Larry Maxam
6. Ayanda Zikhali
7. Lesego Melesi
8. Neo Ranyane
9. Thulile Mabaso
10. Lungile Kunene

In an effort to ensure to strengthen the NEC and its geographic representation the NEC further resolved on the co-option of Trevor Selepe.

After a thorough assessment of the organization and its structures the NEC resolved to relieve 5 Provincial Executive Committee structures in an effort to foster unity and curb elements of rampant factionalism:

The National Working Committee is tasked with the extensive assessment of the remaining provincial structures, the strengthening of PYA relations and all fraternal organizations in the Mass Democratic Movement.

Staying true to its long-standing culture of non-interference of fraternal organizational affairs, SASCO has no perspective on the leadership aspect of the ANC 55th Conference. We do however reiterate our submissions as made to the Policy Conference earlier this year. We expect no lip service from the ANC in government, we unapologetically call for fee free, quality education, decent living conditions for all students, an increase in meal allowances for all students and an increase of the NSFAS bracket from R350 000. to R600 000 to ensure no deserving student from poor and working class backgrounds are left behind.

We wish the ANC a fruitful Conference, a festival of ideas that will ensure a better future for all South Africans. We take this opportunity to pledge support to the convocation of SASCO that has availed itself, we join the scores of young people in echoing for a necessary generational mix to reignite and bring the much needed vibrancy and innovation to the liberation movement to ensure its hegemony for another century.
