African Diaspora Workers Network

African Diaspora Workers Network The African Diaspora Workers Network (ADWN), founded in 2009, is dedicated to advancing the rights of migrant workers.

We subscribe to the Pan-Afrikan principle of solidarity, supporting migrant workers, asylum seekers, and refugees

The African Diaspora Workers Network (ADWN) joins the nation in commemorating the National Day of Reconciliation. December 16 marks the Day of Reconciliation, a South African public holiday established in 1995 to foster national unity and social cohesion following apartheid. This day holds significance in the liberation history and democratisation of South Africa. It acknowledges the shared yet conflicting past, promoting reconciliation and forgiveness. However, it is concerning to see Africans fighting amongst each other, including xenophobic attacks (Afrophobia). Thus, we advocate for unity, reconciliation, and embracing ubuntu, recognizing that forgiveness, unity, and solidarity are our greatest strengths. Let's embrace our shared humanity. Let love lead!

Today, as we celebrate Human Rights Day, let us seize the opportunity to translate our values into tangible actions, harnessing our collective power to create a world where the rights of all individuals are truly upheld.

Let us stand together with GBV survivors and fight GBV.

On Heritage Day, we celebrate South Africa's rich diversity, united regardless of nationality, race, or background. Yet, our values are tested when vigilante groups block migrants, asylum seekers, and refugees from accessing healthcare in public hospitals and clinics. As they target migrants or refugees, locals are not spared either. For various reasons, there are over 7 million undocumented South African citizens in the country. As the modus operandi of the vigilante groupings target, Africans, depending on identity politics targeting Africans, they have unfortunately denied public heath care.

We condemn these barbaric acts and urge the government to take drastic action against these human rights violations. Let's stand together for inclusivity, dignity, and healthcare for all.

During Women's Month, we pay tribute to the heroic achievements of women like Lilian Ngoyi, a prominent anti-apartheid activist and advocate for women's rights, including migrant women. As a leader in the Federation of South African Women (Fedsaw), Ngoyi played a crucial role in organizing the historic 1956 Women's March against pass laws like in the contemporary SA in which ordinary civilians demand documents from poor migrants, asylum seekers and refugees. Her activism focused on challenging racial and gender inequalities faced by women from diverse backgrounds. Today, we witness ongoing discrimination against migrant women from vulnerable groups, who are arrested whilst begging on the streets with children and their children seized without proper channels being followed. Additionally, migrant women, particularly domestic workers are exploited by their employers as we receive reports on poor labour practices on a daily basis. Moreover, the ongoing chaos at public health facilities where pregnant women and children below six are denied access to services meant to be free, is an abomination. Besides, migrants' children keep on being denied the right to education due to lack of documentation despite the new BELA Act being implemented. This is undeniably a violation of the right to free public health services and right to education for all as enshrined in the constitution of South Africa. As the African Diaspora Workers Network (ADWN), we contend that this contravenes the principles for which Mama Ngoyi and others fought during the 1956 March. This constitutes human rights violation, prompting us to urge the Government of South Africa and civil society organizations to stand in solidarity with all women, regardless of nationality.

4. Democratic Governance, Civic Space, Anti-Corruption, and Access to Justice
5. Cultural Diversity Recognition and Embracement
6. Trade and Sustainable Development
7. Digital and Inclusive Economies
8. Sustainable and Resilient Communities and Disaster Risk Reduction
9. Quality Education for Future Sustainability
10. Employment Opportunities and Retention
11. Energy Just Transition, Environment, and Climate Sustainability
12. Equitable Health for All
13. Science, Research, and Innovation Investment
14. Tourism

A huge thank you to Oxfam South Africa for amplifying grassroots voices and lived experiences.

Our Chairperson was appointed Co-Chair of the Just Energy Transition, Environment & Climate Sustainability working group. This is particularly important given the nexus between climate change and migration dynamics. As the ecological crisis intensifies within and beyond the borders, people are displaced or forced to move. Recently, South Africa has experienced unprecedented floods, extremely temperatures in winter as well as high temperatures in summer due to climate change. The recent floods in KZN & Eastern Cape resulted in serious damage and loss of lives. There is no better time for Africa to unite in solidarity for the preservation of humanity and our environment.

Let's keep pushing for meaningful change! ๐Ÿ”ฅ๐Ÿ’š

Africa Day, observed annually on May 25th, traces its origins to 1963, when the founding leaders of the Organisation of African Unity (OAU), now the African Union (AU), designated this day as a moment to reflect on Africaโ€™s achievements, foster solidarity, and collectively advance the fight against colonialism and apartheid. At the time, only seventeen countries had gained independence from colonial rule. Today, all 54 African nations stand politically independent, making this day a profound celebration of African heritage and the enduring spirit of liberation. We owe this milestone to our forefathers and all those who courageously fought for Africaโ€™s freedom.

The ADWN Chairperson and Secretariat attended a springboard event for the boy child hosted by the Moleboheng Matli Foundation on Friday 16 May 2025. This was in commemoration of the International Day of the Boy Child 2025. " Scars turned into Stars."
The Founder and Philanthropist Ambassador aims to ensure boys are not left behind and emphasised that the more our boys are ignored, the more our girls suffer. It was a great session to infuse hope in boys coming from all walks of life particularly, survivors of sexual assult, drugs and substance abuse etc.
Our ADWN Chairperson presented a topic titled: โ€œTowards a Pan-Afrikan Young Collective for Positive Masculinitiesโ€ where she reiterated the importance of prioritizing the boy child as well since much of the focus has been shifted on the girl child for long. She further paused some questions to the boys regarding who their role model was and how they can change things they dislike including dealing with anger issues as it is currently prevalent. She encouraged the boys to express their emotions as they are emotional beings too!
Additionally, she highlighted that there is need to redefine the narrative that not only girls should perform house chores but rather encouraged that everyone should do all the roles. In her closing remarks she emphasised that social and economic empowerment is an aspect to focus on as well as creating more meaningful relationships. Leadership mentorship as shown today by the foundation is also helpful. The young ambassadors have to walk tall and make sure they promote positive masculinity.
