*PRESS STATEMENT*

*FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE*

The New Zimbabwe Democratic Change (NZDC) party strongly opposes the proposed amendment to Zimbabwe's constitution, which seeks to introduce a parliamentary-style system and extend the presidential term to seven years without a referendum.

*Statement from the NZDC Party*

We reject the notion that scrapping presidential elections and allowing Parliament to choose the President is democratic. This move would undermine the people's right to directly elect their leader and concentrate power in the hands of a few individuals.

The extension of the presidential term to seven years without a referendum is a blatant attempt to entrench President Mnangagwa in power and undermine the will of the people. This move is undemocratic and contradicts the principles of good governance and accountability.

Furthermore, tying the President's term to the life of Parliament would create a system of patronage, where Members of Parliament and Senators are beholden to the President and the ruling party. This would undermine the independence of the legislature and perpetuate a culture of corruption and cronyism.

We also note that the proposed system would create a hybrid model, where the President serves as both Head of State and Head of Government, but is also accountable to Parliament. This would create confusion and undermine the separation of powers, leading to a recipe for disaster.

*Challenging the Bill*

As the NZDC party, we are committed to challenging this bill through all available legal and democratic means. We will:

- File a petition in the Constitutional Court, citing Section 167 of the Constitution, which grants the Court jurisdiction to hear and determine disputes concerning the interpretation of the Constitution.
- Mobilize public support through peaceful protests and awareness campaigns, exercising our right to freedom of expression and assembly under Section 61 and 67 of the Constitution.
- Engage with international partners and organizations to raise concerns about the undemocratic nature of the proposed amendment.
- Work with other opposition parties and civil society organizations to build a united front against the amendment.

*Key Concerns*

- Scrapping presidential elections and allowing Parliament to choose the President
- Extending the presidential term to seven years without a referendum
- Tying the President's term to the life of Parliament
- Creating a hybrid model that undermines the separation of powers
- Undermining the independence of the legislature and perpetuating corruption and cronyism

We call on all Zimbabweans to join us in rejecting this amendment and demanding a better future for our country.

*Press Statement*

As the Secretary General of the New Zimbabwe Democratic Change, I, Hon. Joshua Chinamasa, hereby express our unwavering support for the 31 March shutdown. We stand in solidarity with Cde Geza and the brave citizens of Zimbabwe who are demanding a better future for our nation.

We condemn the attempts by the current administration to extend President Mnangagwa's term beyond the constitutionally-mandated two terms. This is a clear violation of our constitution and an affront to the democratic principles that our nation was founded upon ¹.

As Cde Geza has so eloquently stated, "Mnangagwa has failed, he is not fit to run this country and his time to go is now" ². We couldn't agree more. It's time for a new era of leadership that prioritizes the needs and aspirations of the Zimbabwean people.

We urge all citizens to join us in this shutdown and to demand a better future for our nation. Together, we can create a brighter tomorrow for ourselves, our children, and our communities.

While Zimbabweans face immense hardships, it's unacceptable that the government is investing in lavish Presidential Villas at Mt Hampden's Diplomatic Village. This prioritization of luxury over basic needs is a stark reminder of the regime's skewed values. We demand a government that serves the people, not just the elite. It's time for Zimbabweans to unite and demand accountability, transparency, and justice. Let's reclaim our nation's future!

14/08/2024

As the leader of the opposition party in Zimbabwe, I am thrilled to acknowledge and commend the courageous police officer who has chosen to uphold the constitution by supporting protesters exercising their rights under Section 59.

In a country where the ruling party has often used force to silence dissenting voices, this officer's actions are a breath of fresh air. By standing with the protesters, he has demonstrated a commitment to democracy, human rights, and the rule of law.

Section 59 of our constitution is clear: citizens have the right to peaceful assembly, association, and protest. Yet, time and again, we have seen this right trampled upon by those in power.

This officer's bravery sends a powerful message: that the police should protect, not suppress, citizens' rights. His actions embody the spirit of our constitution and inspire hope for a better future.

As the leader of the opposition, I call on all police officers to follow this exemplary officer's lead. Let us work together to build a Zimbabwe where citizens can exercise their rights without fear of reprisal or intimidation.

To the officer, I say: your courage will not go unnoticed. You are a true champion of democracy and human rights. We salute you and stand with you in your commitment to upholding our constitution.

Fellow young Zimbabweans and SADC citizens,

I, Bernard Mutemasango, leader of the NZDC opposition party, urge you to join me in demanding better leadership for our region. Don't be deceived by President Mnangagwa's empty promises and rhetoric. His leadership has failed to address the economic crisis, human rights abuses, and corruption that plague our nation.

As your leader, I encourage you to critically evaluate Mnangagwa's chairmanship of SADC and reject his authoritarian rule. We deserve a brighter future, built on accountability, transparency, and democracy.

Let us unite and make our voices heard! Together, we can create a better Zimbabwe and SADC region, free from oppression and corruption. Join me in this fight for our future!
