The department of Human Settlements will be hosting information sessions in Bloemfontein, Mangaung Metropolitan Municipality (on 3rd June 2026) and Bethlehem, Dihlabeng Local Municipality (on 4th June 2026) this week soliciting public comments on the Draft Amendment Bill of the PIE ACT 19 of 1998 from unlawful occupation of land.

PHOTOS| Today, the MEC for CoGTA and Human Settlements, Mr. Saki Mokoena, handed over 80 completed Breaking New Ground (BNG) houses to deserving beneficiaries in the Fezile Dabi District. MEC Mokoena was accompanied by the newly appointed Mayor of Mafube Local Municipality Cllr. JP Matsole.

A total of 56 houses were handed over in Refengkhotso, Deneysville, while 24 houses were handed over in Frankfort.

This milestone reflects government’s continued commitment to restoring dignity and improving the lives of communities through sustainable human settlements.

Jubilant beneficiaries of the newly completed Breaking New Ground houses could not contain their excitement as they officially became proud homeowners. Their long-awaited dream of owning a home was fulfilled today by MEC for CoGTA and Human Settlements Mr. Saki Mokoena during handover ceremonies held in Deneysville and Frankfort.

PART 2

The Rakhosi family of Botshabelo Section K is finally moving into their newly built Breaking New Ground (BNG) house.

During a site visit in November last year, led by the Minister of Human Settlements, Ms Thembi Simelane, Free State Premier MaQueen Letsoha-Mathae, and MEC for CoGTA and Human Settlements Mr. Saki Mokoena the family’s old and unsafe two-roomed house was demolished and its hazardous asbestos roof was safely removed by specialists.

While construction was underway, the family was accommodated in a Temporary Residential Unit (TRU). Today marks a new chapter as they officially move into a safe, dignified, and decent home.

In November last year, the Minister of Human Settlements Ms Thembi Simelane, and Free State Premier, MaQueen Letsoha-Mathae, accompanied by the MEC for CoGTA and Human Settlements, Mr Saki Mokoena, embarked on a comprehensive service delivery programme in the Mangaung Metro.

The programme focused on the demolition of old, unsafe two-roomed houses, the provision of emergency housing, and the eradication of asbestos-roofed houses, replacing them with dignified Breaking New Ground (BNG) houses.

One of the beneficiaries was 74-year-old Nkgono Mosalentja Maria Modiko, whose shack was uninhabitable and unsuitable for a person living with disabilities. During the visit by the dignitaries, only the foundation of her house had been laid.

Today, MEC Saki Mokoena officially handed over a newly completed BNG house to Ms Modiko, restoring dignity and providing her with a safe and decent home.

The Department of Human Settlements will fulfil its promise to deliver Breaking New Ground (BNG) houses BekeLeBeke!

Tomorrow, MEC Mokoena and his team will officially handover new houses to some community members in Botshabelo, honouring a commitment they made to improve the lives of residents.

The department has remained true to its promise, bringing hope and dignity to the people of Botshabelo.
