PROFILE OF OUR CANDIDATES:
Mr. Shaun Plato.

My name is Shaun Delvin Plato and my journey within the Church began many years ago. I was born into and raised in a family that has always been actively involved in the Church and its various ministries and activities. I was baptised and confirmed in the Parish of All Saints, Mossel Bay. I joined the Servers Guild at a very young age and later I was licensed as a Lay Minister. I also served as a member of Parish Council.
It was during my time serving as a Lay Minister within the Parish of All Saints Mossel Bay, that I entered the discernment process of our Diocese. In 2022 I was selected to further test vocation at the College of Transfiguration for theological education and ministerial formation. I began my journey at COTT in January 2023 and completed it in Novemeber 2025.
In August 2023, at the Annual General Meeting of the Seminarians’ Body, I was elected President of the Seminarians’ Body. I served in this role during the 2023–2024 academic year, during which I also served as a member of the College Council. At the Annual General Meeting in August 2024, I was elected Deputy Chairperson of the Seminarians’ Body, a position I held until completing my tenure in August 2025.
During my formation, I served placements in several parishes within our Diocese and in the Diocese of Grahamstown under the supervision of the College of Transfiguration. I am currently serving as the Parish Worker at Christ Church, Beaufort West together with St Alban’s, Carnarvon and St John’s, Victoria West.

FROM THE BISHOP'S DESK:
The Bishop of George, Edwin Desmond Pockpass, addresses young people on the 50th anniversary of the Soweto Uprising (16 June 1976). He recalls how students courageously protested against apartheid’s oppressive education system, sparking a turning point in South Africa’s history. He acknowledges today’s challenges—youth unemployment, poverty, corruption, crime, and xenophobia—while urging young people to respond with courage, faith, and responsibility.

The message offers five key encouragements:

Remember and reset — Learn from 1976 to renew freedom and build differently.

Carry faith into public life — Let prayer and citizenship work together for justice, mercy, and humility.

Refuse hatred — Reject xenophobia, scapegoating, and division; choose truth, courage, and neighbourliness.

Guard creation — Protect the environment as part of caring for people and future generations.

Lead without waiting — Leadership begins with small, everyday acts of service, honesty, and bridge‑building.

The Bishop concludes with a prayer: that the courage of 1976, the compassion of Christ, and the wisdom of faith will guide young people to persevere, confront hard truths, and keep hope alive. He reminds them that they are not only the leaders of tomorrow but citizens of today—freedom lives in every generation, and now it lives in them.
