Today, the Municipality held an engagement session with officials from the Department of Economic Development, Environment, Conservation and Tourism (DEDECT) to deliberate on critical matters relating to waste management, landfill site operations, environmental compliance, and the eradication of illegal dumping sites across the municipal area.
The session provided an opportunity for both institutions to assess the current status of waste management services, identify challenges affecting the management of landfill facilities, and explore practical interventions aimed at improving environmental sustainability.
Particular attention was given to compliance with environmental legislation, the implementation of the Municipality's Integrated Waste Management Plan (IWMP), and measures required to address the proliferation of illegal dumping sites in villages across the municipality.
Following extensive deliberations, a comprehensive action plan was developed, outlining specific activities, responsibilities, implementation timelines, and monitoring mechanisms. The action plan seeks to strengthen waste management practices, improve the operation and maintenance of landfill sites, enhance community awareness on responsible waste disposal, and promote environmental stewardship throughout the Municipality.
Key resolutions emanating from the engagement include the identification and rehabilitation of illegal dumping hotspots, improving landfill management and record-keeping systems, conducting environmental compliance assessments, and implementing community education and awareness campaigns aimed at promoting cleaner and healthier communities. The Municipality will also work closely with DEDECT and other stakeholders to secure technical support and ensure adherence to applicable environmental regulations and standards.
The implementation of the agreed resolutions will contribute significantly towards achieving the objectives of the Integrated Waste Management Plan and protecting the environment.
