FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
STATEMENT ON THE PASSING OF MR BHEKUYISE MUNTUKAYISE NTULI

KWAZULU-NATAL LEGISLATURE MOURNS THE UNTIMELY DEATH OF ITS MEMBER AND MEMBER OF THE EXECUTIVE MEC, MR BHEKUYISE MUNTUKAYISE NTULI

Yesterday , 16 January 2021 we learned with deep shock the news of the untimely passing of KwaZulu-Natal Legislature Member, Mr Bhekuyise Muntukayise Ntuli. He passed away at a Durban hospital yesterday evening due to COVID-19 related complications. He had been unwell for some time.

Affectionately known by his clan name “Mphemba”, served as a member of National Parliament of South Africa from 1999 to 2003 before joining the KwaZulu-Natal Legislature during the 4th term where he served as a member of the Transport Portfolio Committee and Chairperson of the Community Safety and Liaison Portfolio Committee. Mr Ntuli was sworn in to the position of MEC in September 2019. Throughout his life in politics, he has been a humble, loyal, dedicated, hard-working and exemplary servant of the people of KwaZulu-Natal.

He was a seasoned politician and a union activist. He held Primary Teachers Certificate from eMadadeni College; a degree in Management from UCT Graduate School of Business; a Certificate in Leadership from Wits University; and Post–graduate Diploma in Research, Strategic Diplomacy and Transitional Justice from University of Johannesburg.

Mr Ntuli’s rare qualities of being a peacemaker even under difficult circumstances earned him respect among his peers. This is not surprising because throughout his life, he performed extraordinary deeds in various structures and domains he served in.

In recognising his leadership qualities, his organisation, the ANC, elected him to serve as the Chairperson of the ANC in the Musa Dladla Region for more than 15 years. He served for more than 20 years as a member and leader of the ANC sub–committee on Peace and Stability.
Despite his tasks and responsibilities being complex and sensitive in nature, he tackled them with calmness. Passionate for peace in the province he had begun to implement a number of programmes that were aimed at reversing the tide of Gender-Based Violence, Taxi Violence, and reducing the carnage on the province’s roads. He has consistently displayed exceptional leadership and wisdom, with his passing, our legislature and indeed the entire country has lost an upright leader, a deep thinker, and a true servant of the people. We pray for comfort in this hour of grief.

On behalf of the legislature community, I would like to extend our deepest sympathies to the Ntuli family, his friends, the people of KwaZulu-Natal and the organisation he represented in the Legislature, the African National Congress. May his revolutionary soul rest in peace.

ISSUED ON BEHALF OF THE KWAZULU-NATAL LEGISLATURE SPEAKER MS NONTEMBEKO BOYCE

A LIFE OF A GIANT SHORTLIVED

It is with great sadness that uMlalazi Municipality confirms the untimely passing of His Worship the Mayor Cllr Thelumoya Basil Zulu.

Mayor Zulu succumbed to a short illness. He was a visionary leader of note, selfless and a committed public servant with love of the people he served with diligence.

Zulu, a family man and a lawyer by profession joined uMlalazi Municipality in 2008 as a PR Cllr and when his political party, the ANC, won 2011 local government elections for the first time in uMlalazi, he was then entrusted with a mammoth task of being a Mayor.

Cllr Zulu took it upon himself to ensure that community services are prioritized, delivered and there's unity within the institution despite the Municipality having a mixture of opposition political parties in its council.

UMlalazi Municipality conveys deepest condolences to the Zulu family on this great loss of the head of the family during these difficult times of the pandemic outbreak.

Zulu has been vocal in fighting the spread of COVID-19 and creating awareness since the first Presidents announcement.

The Municipality in communication with the Zulu family will announce the funeral arrangements in due course.

MAY HIS BELOVED SOUL REST IN PEACE

The Premier in his last media briefing updated us that, “KwaZulu-Natal is now in the eye of the storm. The picture has dramatically changed. We have now arrived at a point where almost everyone knows somebody who has been infected with Covid-19. It is no longer a disease looked at from a distance, it is now here at home”. It is common knowledge that King Cetshwayo District Municipality is now amongst the top three (3) districts that are recording growth in Covid-19 infections and deaths too. UMlalazi as a town and all surrounding areas are also recording growth in Covid-19 cases, and we can no longer keep quiet, as the enemy is advancing. We are called to raise the standard against him too.

As a child of GOD deployed in the legislature, I am appealing that we join our hearts and faith in prayer, since we know that GOD answers prayer. If this can be in churches, in numbers less than 50 then do so, under precautionary measures as stated. Or else we can utilize online church services. Therefore please join us in prayer on Thursday (06/08/2020) at 14h00 pm until 16h00 midday for our intercessory prayer.

The line will be open from 13h40, to allow us to come in on time.

After hearing about the plight of Ntombikayise Nala, a 57 year old woman living in Mbongolwane under ward 3 Umlalazi Eshowe, MPL member Honourable L.X Hlongwa initiated an assessment aid program in efforts of providing relief to the family. With the Nala family's RDP house blown away with most of their belongings and damage suffered due to the inclement weather that swept across the whole country last week, the family desperately needed help. After identifying the Nala family, Hon Hlongwa today dispatched food parcels and blankets to the family working together with the ward Cllr, Jiyane.
