Standing with the Residents of Lakehaven Estates

Following engagements with the KwaZulu-Natal Department of Human Settlements earlier this month, I had the opportunity to once again meet with residents of Ward 11, Newlands East, to provide feedback on discussions held between NERRACO, the Department, and myself regarding the ongoing challenges at Lakehaven Estates.

During the meeting, detailed feedback was provided to tenants of the social housing project, which is managed by First Metro Housing Company NPC. Residents were updated on the progress made in raising concerns relating to evictions, inadequate maintenance, and the unacceptable treatment experienced by many tenants.

I highlighted the tireless efforts of NERRACO and the IFP in advocating for the rights and dignity of residents and ensuring that their voices are heard by the relevant authorities.

As a direct result of these engagements, the KZN Department of Human Settlements has committed to visiting Lakehaven Estates within the next month to engage directly with tenants, hear their individual complaints, and take the necessary steps to address the crisis facing the project.

I am grateful to the residents for their continued trust and support. Their resilience and determination remain an inspiration.

I also extend my sincere appreciation to NERRACO for their unwavering support, courage, and commitment to fighting for justice on behalf of the people.

Together, we will continue to pursue accountability, dignity, and safe living conditions for all residents.

πŸ‡ΏπŸ‡¦πŸ—³οΈ In preparation for the National Voter Registration Weekend on 20-21 June 2026, Dr Jonathan Annipen - IFP Councillor conducted training for party agents from Wards 90 and 93 in the South Constituency of the eThekwini Metropolitan Municipality.

Addressing trainees, Dr Jonathan Annipen emphasized that the Inkatha Freedom Party places a high premium on the role of party agents, who serve as the guardians of electoral integrity and transparency. He stressed that party agents must conduct themselves with discipline, professionalism, integrity and impartiality while carrying out their oversight responsibilities without fear or favour.

"The success and credibility of any election are inextricably linked to the calibre of party agents and their understanding of electoral procedures and practices. Well-trained agents are essential to ensuring that voter registration processes are conducted fairly, lawfully and transparently," said Annipen.

The training focused on voter registration procedures, the rights and responsibilities of party agents, identifying irregularities, and ensuring compliance with the Electoral Commission's regulations throughout the registration weekend.

The IFP encourages all eligible South Africans, especially first-time voters and those who have changed their place of residence, to make use of the National Voter Registration Weekend on 20 and 21 June 2026 to register and verify their voting details.

Every vote counts. Every voter matters. Together, let us strengthen our democracy through active participation and vigilant oversight.

COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT IN WARD 50

IFP Dr Jonathan Annipen - IFP Councillor attended a community meeting in Ward 50, eThekwini Metro, convened by IFP Ward 50 Chairperson, Cde Nalini Naidoo.

The meeting provided residents with an opportunity to raise concerns relating to safety and security, street lighting, infrastructure maintenance, and other service delivery challenges affecting the community.

Councillor Annipen listened to the concerns raised by residents and undertook to engage the relevant municipal departments, law enforcement agencies, and other stakeholders to address these issues. He further committed to providing feedback to residents on the progress of these engagements.

"The safety and well-being of our communities remain a priority. Effective service delivery and responsive governance can only be achieved when residents actively participate in identifying challenges and working together towards solutions," said Councillor Annipen.

The IFP remains committed to being accessible, accountable, and responsive to the needs of all residents. We thank the community members who attended the meeting and contributed constructively to the discussion.

Together, we can build safer, cleaner, and better-managed communities.

IFP COUNCILLORS ENGAGE ETHEKWINI OFFICIALS ON LONG-STANDING HOUSING AND TENANCY CHALLENGES

Phoenix, Durban – IFP Councillors Jane Naidoo and Jonathan Annipen yesterday met with senior officials from eThekwini Municipality's Human Settlements and Treasury Departments to discuss a range of long-standing housing, tenancy and property ownership challenges affecting residents across the municipality.

The meeting focused on critical issues including council tenancy regularisation, suspensive sale agreements, historical municipal debt disputes, title deed transfers and challenges relating to deceased estates.

Councillor Jonathan Annipen described the engagement as constructive and productive, noting that several important commitments were secured from municipal officials.

One of the key outcomes of the meeting was an undertaking by the municipality to intensify efforts to regularise council tenants who qualify to enter into purchase agreements for the properties they occupy. This process is expected to assist many long-term tenants who have been waiting for years to secure ownership of their homes.

The issue of historical "parked-off debt" was also raised. Residents have for some time complained that debt which had previously been removed or parked on municipal accounts was later reintroduced when the municipality migrated to the Revenue Management System (RMS). Officials acknowledged the concerns and indicated that the matter would be revisited, with the aim of addressing these anomalies through the municipality's new billing system, which is expected to be implemented next year.

Another significant matter discussed was the plight of families occupying municipal properties where the original tenant has passed away, but the property has not yet been transferred from the municipality into private ownership. Municipal officials committed to investigating mechanisms through which such cases could be incorporated into the municipality's deceased estates programme, thereby assisting families to regularise ownership and facilitate property transfers.

The meeting also addressed concerns relating to ageing municipal housing stock. Officials indicated that pre-1994 flats which have not previously undergone refurbishment or upgrades would be identified, assessed and considered for future upgrading programmes.

Councillor Annipen welcomed the outcomes of the meeting and expressed optimism that residents would soon begin to see meaningful progress.

"We are encouraged by the commitments made during this engagement and look forward to seeing tangible action in the days and weeks ahead. These are issues that have affected residents for many years, and it is important that practical solutions are implemented to provide certainty and dignity to affected families," said Annipen.

He further called on body corporates whose flats have never benefited from municipal upgrading programmes to submit their details to the IFP Office in Phoenix. Residents who have been waiting for title deeds from the municipality and have not yet received them are also encouraged to register their details with the office.

"We want to ensure that every legitimate case is brought to the attention of the relevant authorities. Our office remains committed to assisting residents wherever possible and advocating for solutions that will improve their quality of life," he added.

Residents requiring assistance or wishing to report outstanding title deed matters, tenancy concerns or properties requiring upgrades are encouraged to contact the IFP Office in Phoenix.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

IFP REJECTS AND RUBBISHES BASELESS DA CLAIMS REGARDING WATER AND ELECTRICITY DELIVERY

The Inkatha Freedom Party - IFP in eThekwini utterly rejects, condemns, and rubbishes the latest opportunistic and baseless allegations made by the Democratic Alliance (DA) claiming that the Chairperson of the IFP in eThekwini district and also the chairperson of the Trading Services in eThekwini Municipality, Councillor Mdu Nkosi is failing to deliver water and electricity services to the community.

These unsubstantiated claims are nothing more than a desperate, malicious political smear campaign designed to mislead the public, score cheap political points, and deflect from the DA's own structural shortcomings. The IFP views these allegations with the highest degree of contempt.

Cllr Mdu Nkosi, working alongside our dedicated leadership structures and local government representatives, remains unshakably committed to service delivery. The suggestion that our leadership is inactive or indifferent to the community’s critical needs is completely contradicted by verifiable progress on the ground.

To prove that their claims are baseless, this morning Cllr Nkosi, reached out to the DA’s eThekwini mayoral candidate, Haniff Hoosen, asking him to provide the details of the areas without water and electricity.

He promised to get back to Cllr Nkosi but failed to do so until midday.

β€œWe have numerous significant infrastructure projects underway to ensure long-term water security and stability for our communities for generations to come. One being the R11.5 billion infrastructure investment at Umkomaas and the R1.2 billion Southern Aqueduct project that is showing a wonderful progress,” said Cllr Nkosi.

The IFP refuses to be distracted by the DA’s ongoing political grandstanding. While the DA chooses to manufacture noise from air-conditioned offices, the IFP will remain on the ground, working tirelessly to restore dignity, build infrastructure, and deliver sustainable water and electricity to our communities.

We urge the community to reject the DA’s propaganda and continue working hand-in-hand with the municipality’s officials to build a better, well-serviced future for all.
