Northlands Girls' High School was established in 1949 and is situated in the heart of Durban North, Durban, on the east coast of South Africa. We are proud of our traditions our `Old Girls' and our history. Our first priority is ensuring our 700 girls, aged 12-18, receive a first-class, relevant, values-based, education. Our girls are privileged to be taught in an environment of care, respect and

creativity, and our small classes allow each girls uniqueness to be celebrated. We have a nurturing environment in which to work, play and create happy lasting memories. This morning, Leriska Govender proudly represented South Africa at the Junior English Olympiad – Asiarope International in Thailand.

Her dedication, talent and academic excellence shone brightly on the international stage, bringing great honour to Northlands Girls’ High School.

Leriska’s remarkable achievement is not only a personal triumph but also a testament to the importance of nurturing young leaders who pursue excellence. She carried the South African flag with distinction and made both her school and country incredibly proud.

The NGHS staff recently launched a book club with a peaceful silent-reading session in a quiet corner of our beautiful school gardens.

It was a welcome opportunity to step away from the busyness and stress of tests and marking, slow down and simply enjoy a good book.

The club will meet regularly, and we look forward to welcoming more staff members who have expressed an interest in joining. Here’s to creating time for reading, relaxation and connection! 📖☕🤎

🎤 NGHS PUBLIC SPEAKERS REACH THE NATIONAL FINALS! 🌟

We are incredibly proud to announce that three of our talented public speakers have qualified for the national finals of the South African Literacy Association Public Speaking Competition!

👏 Isiphile Ngubane and Mekdelawit Wolde, both in Grade 10, qualified in the English Prepared Speech category.

👏 Okwethu Hlongwane, in Grade 11, qualified in the Prepared Reading category.

Next term, these three outstanding young ladies will compete against the best speakers from every province.

📚 NGHS HISTORY EDUCATIONAL CAMP TO SPION KOP 🏕️

Our History learners stepped beyond the classroom and into the past during an enriching educational camp to Spion Kop.

A visit to Spion Kop Mountain and its historic battlefield site provided the learners with valuable insight into South African history. A special thank you to Mr Ray Heron for conducting an informative and engaging guided tour.

The TLT facilitators also led a variety of history-themed team-building activities, creating an experience filled with learning, personal growth and teamwork.

Thank you to Ms Loganathan and Mrs Pillay for accompanying and supporting our learners throughout the camp.

It was a memorable journey through history that greatly enriched and inspired our learners! 🤎🩶🤍⚔️

🕊️ IN LOVING MEMORY OF MRS ZANELE MJAJA 🕊️

It is with profound sadness that the Northlands Girls’ High School community learnt of the passing of Mrs Zanele Mjaja, a former educator at our school.

Mrs Mjaja’s contribution to education and the lives of the learners she taught will be fondly remembered. Her passing is a great loss to her family, friends, former learners, colleagues and the wider school community.

We extend our heartfelt condolences to her loved ones and to the St Henry’s Marist College community during this difficult time. May they find strength and comfort in the treasured memories they shared with her.

On 20 August, our Gr12 Visual Arts Learners proudly showcased a remarkable body of work created over the past three years.

It was a beautiful evening celebrating creativity, growth, dedication and the incredible artistic journeys of our Class of 2026. 🎨

A heartfelt thank you to Mr Trotter and the Estate Team, Mrs Fynn, Ms Labuschagne, Mrs Sokele and the Catering Committee for helping make the evening so special. Thank you to Ms Vega and Ms Yumata for your passion and guidance.
