Today, I joined Department of Basic Education South Africa Minister Siviwe Gwarube MP in Mitchells Plain, on behalf of Provincial Minister Jaco Londt, visiting Lentegeur High School and Little Prince and Princesses ECD Centre.

At Lentegeur High School, we spoke with the matric learners and viewed the school’s new sports and care facilities. At Little Prince and Princesses ECD Centre, we accepted the handover of trolley libraries sponsored by AVBOB South Africa and Oxford University Press SA - Schools.

As the Western Cape Minister of Social Development, it was wonderful to see these investments supporting our young people, from education and sport to early childhood development and encouraging a love of reading. 💙

Today, we mark International Foetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD) Awareness Day.

This day reminds us of the importance of avoiding alcohol during pregnancy. Alcohol consumed during pregnancy can cross to the unborn baby and may cause permanent, irreversible harm to their development.

My message as the Western Cape Minister of Social Development is simple: There is no known safe amount of alcohol during pregnancy. If you are planning a pregnancy or are pregnant, avoid alcohol. If you are struggling to stop drinking, please seek professional support.

Call 0800 220 250 if you need help seeking professional support.

I was honoured to visit Huis Ravenzicht in Kraaifontein with Premier Alan Winde, where I had the privilege of meeting Aunt Maureen Feder and helping hand over a walker she had been dreaming of. 💙

As the Western Cape Minister of Social Development, moments like these remind me why the work we do matters, ensuring that our senior citizens are supported and treated with the dignity they deserve.

Huis Ravenzicht has been caring for seniors in the Kraaifontein community for almost 50 years. A heartfelt thank you to the incredible staff for the compassion and care you provide every day.
