Official Opening of Solar Powered Borehole at Lillydale, Rhulani Xidakeni Village

The Executive Mayor, Councillor Moroane, together with the MEC for Economic Development and Tourism, Ms Sidell, officially handed over and opened another solar-powered borehole at Lillydale in Rhulani Xidakeni Village,this follows the handover of similar project's at Iglington and Cork solar boreholes.

The project is a result of a successful public-private partnership initiated by Innovation: Africa, led by Mr Ngobeni ,in collaboration with the Mpumalanga Provincial Government and Bushbuckridge Local Municipality. The initiative also received support and funding from MalaMala Game Reserve and Alstom Foundation for the drilling and equipping of the water infrastructure.

The newly installed solar-powered borehole is expected to bring much-needed relief to the community of Rhulani by improving access to clean and reliable water.

Community members who are beneficiaries of the project attended the handover ceremony alongside representatives from the Jongilanga Traditional Authority, Malamala management,Innovation Africa team,the Department of Economic Development and Tourism, and municipal officials. The Department of Health also rendered various health services during the event.

This project did not only bring water to the community,during the implementation of the project, few community members were employed, received training and certificates in different kind of skills that will help them in opening their companies,assist in maintaining the project and when looking for jobs.

Executive Mayor Cllr Lydia Matlanatso Moroane flanked by the local ward Councilors from ward 16 and ward 32, municipal officials visited the Bushbuckridge Clay Bricks in Hebron today the 19th of May 2026. Chairperson of the Bushbuckridge Clay Bricks starring committee Mr. Solly Khoza welcomed the entourage.

The site visit was to forge a good working relationship, assess, and ensure the smooth and proper running of the company to benefit the people of Bushbuckridge in return.

Chairperson Mr. Solly Khoza alluded to the importance of working together and highlighting the challenges of theft, electricity, and vandalism.

The company uses a diesel generator for the manufacturing of Bricks, and it comes at a higher cost to the company. The real working rate is two days production, and diesel costs limit production on a daily basis.

The Bushbuckridge Clay Bricks has employed one hundred forty-two (142) people around the local and surrounding villages.

The company also plays an important role in corporate social responsibility by giving back to the community.

Grading,regravelling of streets and closing of dongas at Mashonamini, Mkhuhlu Trust and Newington respectively that were damaged during the floods earlier in the year.

Road maintenance teams are on the ground attending to inaccessible streets .

BLM team on site last night fixing the burst bulk pipe in Bushbuckridge.
The pipe is fixed ,they are currently pumping water for distribution to the community.
Community is requested to allow muddy water out of the pipes before they can consumption.
