Jebels & Janbiyas: Kidnap Avoidance 101 Quitting his defense intelligence contractor job in Afghanistan Brandon Scott moves to Yemen as embassies are evacuating under the threat of Al Qaeda.

In 2013 a defence intelligence contractor quit his job in Afghanistan & moved to Yemen to study Arabic. As embassies are evacuating under the threat of Al Qaeda & the fragile post-Arab Spring transition government is teetering - Mr. Scott embeds himself with an eclectic group of expat teachers, students, journalist & aid workers. Out of fear of his safety Mr. Scott keeps his profession to himself

- or at least thinks he does - while living day to day among the few western expats left in the country. All the while, Mr. Scott relishes in the constant objective observation that likely, his paranoia is over rated - most of the time. Jebels & Janbiyas is part expat memoir, part spy novel, part cultural study and part comedy.

"I still wonder to this day where the cave led. Part of me fantasized that if you kept going through it, you would come back out to Yemen, a thousand years ago. And that besides some topical elements of phones and cars, Yemen would look the same. The people for sure, would be the same. The same hospitality, the same nativism and curiosity of the other and the same Yemeni smile. You can always tell so much about a culture by their smile.

The other fantasy in my head was that it led to the center of the earth - a hollowed out world of dragons, prehistoric beasts, spirits and magic. For a place as mystical, mysterious and magical as Yemen, I guess both could be true. Perhaps though, what truly lay beyond, in that dark, forbidden chasm, was the soul of Yemen, an energy that fuels and feeds the Arabian mystery that is Yemen - a timeless place that in some ways, never ages.
