Australia is proposing a major change to the way people experience social media.

Under the proposed “My Feed, My Way” initiative, users would be given a choice between a personalised feed powered by recommendation algorithms and a feed showing posts only from friends, creators and accounts they have chosen to follow.

The proposal does not aim to eliminate algorithms from social media. Instead, it would give users greater control over whether algorithmically recommended content shapes their default feed. The Australian government says the move is intended to put more choice in users’ hands and encourage technology companies to take greater responsibility for online h@rms.

The idea comes amid growing concerns that engagement driven recommendation systems can keep users scrolling by repeatedly serving highly engaging or emotionally charged content. Researchers have also warned that simply switching off recommendations may not solve every problem, as follower based feeds can still contain harmful material or create information bubbles.

If approved, the policy could become an important test of whether giving people more control over recommendation systems can make social media healthier, less addictive and more user driven.

Would you choose a personalised feed or posts only from accounts you follow?

Nominees may be recognized for building technology companies, creating employment, developing innovative products, solving real world problems, advancing research, strengthening Pakistan’s digital economy, mentoring others, building communities or representing Pakistan’s technology ecosystem globally.

Important: Individuals recognized among the 100 Tech Heroes of Pakistan 2023 are not eligible for the 2026 edition.

The World Bank has raised concerns over slow progress on Pakistan’s Digital Economy Enhancement Project, a programme backed by approximately $69.16 million in financing.

According to the latest project update, only $8.36 million has been disbursed so far, representing a relatively small share of the total financing available for the project.

The World Bank has called for a more time bound implementation strategy to accelerate progress and improve Pakistan’s digital public services.

The project is aimed at strengthening Pakistan’s digital economy and improving the delivery of public services through digital systems. Faster implementation could help expand access to government services, improve efficiency and support the country’s broader digital transformation agenda.

The slow pace of disbursement highlights the importance of stronger implementation, coordination and monitoring to ensure that approved development financing translates into practical improvements for citizens.

Pakistan has been pursuing wider digital transformation reforms, including the development of digital public infrastructure and more efficient technology based government services. Ensuring that major digital projects move from planning to implementation will remain critical to achieving these goals.

Apple’s iPhone 17 lineup has seen significant price reductions in Pakistan, with some models reportedly becoming cheaper by as much as Rs112,000 as the expected iPhone 18 launch approaches.

Market prices for the iPhone 17 series have been softening in Pakistan, although the exact price varies depending on the model, storage capacity, PTA status, seller and availability. Recent market reports have already recorded substantial reductions in some iPhone 17 variants.

The timing comes as Apple is expected to unveil the next generation of iPhones around September 9. Reports suggest the initial iPhone 18 launch could focus on premium models, while the standard iPhone 18 may arrive later, potentially giving the iPhone 17 a longer presence in the market.

For Pakistani buyers, the falling prices could make the iPhone 17 lineup more attractive, particularly for those who want a recent flagship without paying launch prices. However, buyers should compare PTA approved and non PTA prices carefully and verify warranty, storage and variant details before purchasing.

Anthropic researcher Jacob Coxon has resigned from the AI company, w@rning that the race toward increasingly powerful, self improving artificial intelligence could move faster than humanity’s ability to control it.

Coxon, who previously worked at OpenAI and spent the past three years conducting pretraining research at both companies, said neither organization was acting responsibly enough. He argued that leading AI labs are racing toward self improving superintelligence while the necessary safety measures remain insufficient.

In posts explaining his resignation, Coxon said people building advanced AI privately believe the technology could potentially cause catastrophic harm to humanity before the end of the decade. He called for stronger coordination between AI laboratories and suggested that slowing or temporarily pausing capability development may be necessary.

His concerns have received support from Anthropic alignment science lead Evan Hubinger, who said he personally believes there is a greater than 10% chance that AI could kill all humans within the next decade. Hubinger also acknowledged that Anthropic does not yet have a clear solution for aligning superintelligent AI with human values.

These statements do not establish that AI will cause human exti-nction. They highlight an ongoing debate among AI researchers over whether technological progress is moving faster than safety research, governance and humanity’s ability to understand increasingly autonomous systems.

Five major Pakistani cities have been ranked among the world’s 10 least resilient cities to climate ri*sks, highlighting the growing vulnerability of Pakistan’s urban centres.

According to a new assessment by geospatial analytics company AlphaGeo, 72 major cities worldwide were evaluated based on their exposure to climate h@zards and their ability to adapt and withstand their impacts.

Hyderabad ranked second among the least resilient cities globally, followed by Multan in third place. Lahore ranked fifth, Faisalabad seventh and Karachi eighth.

The assessment considers ri-sks including inland and coastal fl00ding, extreme heat, drought, wildfires and hurricane winds, while also examining adaptation measures such as early w@rning systems, governance, climate policies, flood protection and drainage infrastructure.

The findings place South Asian cities prominently among those facing the highest remaining climate r*sks. For Pakistan, the results underline the need for stronger urban planning, resilient infrastructure, effective drainage systems, early warning mechanisms and better disaster preparedness.

As climate change inte-nsifies extreme weather and heat r-sks, strengthening the resilience of Pakistan’s rapidly growing cities will be increasingly important for protecting communities, infrastructure and economic activity.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has said the government recovered Rs800 billion in one year through enforcement measures, without imposing any new taxes.

Addressing leading industrialists, businessmen and entrepreneurs in Islamabad, the prime minister said the recovery was part of structural reforms undertaken with consultation from the business community. He said the government pursued cases that had remained pending in courts for years, particularly matters involving indirect sales tax paid by consumers.

The prime minister also stressed that Pakistan’s future economic growth must be export led. He said growth without a strong export orientation would have limited meaning and highlighted tax relief provided to exporters in the latest budget.

The government has been holding consultations with business leaders on taxation, investment, exports and economic reforms. PM Shehbaz said continued coordination with the private sector would remain important for improving the business environment and increasing exports.

The reported Rs800 billion recovery highlights the government’s stated focus on stronger enforcement and revenue collection rather than introducing additional taxes.

The Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) has mandated a 5 percent withholding tax on payments received by social media influencers and content creators from digital platforms.

Under the reported policy, banks will deduct 5 percent when creators receive payments from social media platforms. The measure has been effective from July 1, 2026.

The move brings greater attention to the taxation of income generated through the rapidly expanding digital economy, including earnings from content creation and social media platforms.

For influencers and creators earning through international or local digital platforms, the withholding mechanism could directly affect the amount received in their bank accounts. Creators may therefore need to maintain proper records of their digital earnings and understand how the withholding tax applies to their income and overall tax liability.

The development is part of the broader push toward improving tax compliance and bringing more economic activity into the formal tax system as Pakistan’s digital and creator economy continues to grow.
