Today is a momentous day for District 7. This morning, San Antonio City Council unanimously selected Rosie Castro to serve out the remainder of my term as District 7 Councilwoman.

With over 50 years of serving and advocating for our community, Rosie is well-versed on the issues and needs of District 7 and the City of San Antonio. In 1971, Rosie originally ran to serve on our city council with the hopes of bringing a voice to underserved and underrepresented residents in our community. As councilwoman, I know she will hold true to these shared principles of ensuring everyone in our community has a voice at city hall. She will be a fierce advocate for our district, and I look forward to supporting her during this time of transition.

I would also like to thank all the District 7 residents who applied to serve in this role and the numerous neighbors and community members who made their voice heard throughout this process. District 7 is better because of your continued engagement throughout our community. I look forward to continue being your neighbor and partner as we work to make our district stronger, safer, and brighter for all.

It has been an honor of a lifetime to represent District 7. While I may be stepping away from city council, I know that our district is in good hands. I wish Councilwoman Castro all the best as she serves the residents of District 7. ¡Felicidades!

Dear Neighbors,

It has been my honor and privilege to serve as your City Councilwoman over the past five and a half years — to work alongside you, to fight for our community’s needs, and to chart a path forward worthy of our children.

Today, I am announcing my resignation from City Council.

While serving has been fulfilling, it is now time for me to direct my attention to personal matters, including my new family. Over the past year and a half, my personal responsibilities have grown, and it is now time for me to ensure I give them the attention they need.

As your elected representative, I have strived to meet the needs of our growing community. However, as a new mother, I believe it is my responsibility to put the needs of my family first. I have made the difficult determination that I cannot do both right now, and that it is in the best interest of both for me to step down.

I want to express my heartfelt thanks to you, the residents of District 7, for entrusting me with the responsibility of representing you. It has been an honor to serve.

With the help of you and hundreds of your neighbors, we have made tremendous progress for District 7.

Thank you again for the privilege of serving as your councilwoman.

Hasta pronto.

QUESTION: if you were a parent serving on a City Board or Commission, what would you prefer?

A. Having childcare on-site at the meeting you're attending

B. Getting a stipend for childcare services needed during board/commission meetings

C. Getting reimbursed for childcare needed during board/commission meetings

D. Arranging childcare services yourself with the City paying upfront for the service

Part of my vision for San Antonio is that we eliminate barriers to connecting and participating in local government. With that goal in mind, I'm pushing for the City to begin offering childcare for members of City boards and commissions while they are attending board and commission meetings. Opportunities to serve the community should be open for all, including parents.
