The Bureau of Plant Industry โ€“ Baguio National Crop Research, Development and Production Support Center (BPI-BNCRDPSC) successfully conducted a one-day training entitled โ€œCapacity Building on Improved Cacao Production: Clonal Propagation, Nursery Management, and Orchard Establishment and Rehabilitationโ€ on May 28, 2026, at the Multi-purpose Hall, Pappa, Sablan, Benguet. The activity was conducted in line with the bureauโ€™s continuing commitment to support and empower farmers in the Cordillera Administrative Region (CAR) through the provision of technical knowledge, quality planting materials, and technical assistance aimed at promoting sustainable agricultural development.
The training was attended by forty-five (45) participants composed of local cacao growers and processors, representatives from the Local Government Unit (LGU), Office of the Municipal Agriculturist (OMAG), Office of the Provincial Agriculturist (OPAG), members of the Retired Miner Employees and Dependents Association (REMINEDAP), and various cacao growers of Sablan, Benguet. The active participation of stakeholders underscored the increasing interest in strengthening cacao production and promoting livelihood opportunities within the municipality.
The activity primarily aimed to enhance the technical capability of local cacao growers in the production of asexually propagated cacao seedlings through the application of proper propagation techniques and improved nursery management practices. It also sought to introduce recommended cultural management practices for cacao production, familiarize participants with the processes involved in plant nursery accreditation and plant material certification, and strengthen their knowledge and skills in the identification and management of common pests and diseases affecting cacao.
In addition to the lectures and hands-on demonstrations conducted during the training, the Center, in collaboration with the NSQCS-CAR team, expressed its commitment to assist interested cacao growers in complying with the requirements for nursery accreditation and plant material certification. This initiative aims to ensure the production and distribution of quality, disease-free, and certified planting materials that will contribute to the long-term sustainability and productivity of the local cacao industry in the municipality.

Patuloy ang BPI-BNCRDPSC, sa pamamagitan ng National Urban and Peri-Urban Agriculture Program (NUPAP), sa pagsusulong ng mas masigla at masustansyang pamayanan sa pakikiisa nito sa PuroKalusugan Outreach Activity noong Mayo 25, 2026 sa Guisad Surong Gym, Baguio City, katuwang ang Health Services Office of the City of Baguio. Bilang suporta sa urban gardening at food security, namahagi ang BPI ng libreng vegetable seeds sa 100 benepisyaryo upang hikayatin ang bawat pamilya na magtanim ng sariling pagkain at makiisa sa pagtataguyod ng sustenableng agrikultura para sa mas malusog na komunidad.

May 22, 2026 Nakiisa ang BPI-BNCRDPSC sa isinagawang Agri-Serbisyo Caravan noong Mayo 22, 2026 sa Provincial Astrodome, Bulanao, Tabuk City, Kalinga na pinangunahan ni Agriculture Secretary Francisco Tiu Laurel Jr., kasabay ng paglulunsad ng โ€œBenteng Bigas Meron Na!โ€ initiative. Mahigit 300 magsasaka ang nabigyan ng libreng vegetable seeds tulad ng kalabasa, upo, pechay, at okra, gayundin ng vermicompost at IEC materials mula sa NSQCS bilang suporta sa patuloy na pagpapalakas ng sektor ng agrikultura at seguridad sa pagkain.

On May 20, 2026, the BPI-Baguio NCRDPSC, represented by Dr. Juliet M. Ochasan, participated in the AGRICOOLTOUR: Launching of the Upgraded Smart Greenhouse Project in the Philippines (SGPP) and Showcasing of Sustainable Aquaculture through Solar Powered Irrigation System (SPIS) held at the DA-Rizal Agricultural Research and Experiment Station (DA-RARES) in Brgy. Cuyambay, Tanay, Rizal.

The activity highlighted the launching of the upgraded fully automated Smart Greenhouse Project, originally supported through KOICA and now enhanced with advanced sensors capable of monitoring temperature, moisture, relative humidity, and other environmental conditions. The project is being led by the DA-RARES team headed by Dr. Alexandra A. Quitoles Jamoralin, RAgr., showcasing innovative approaches toward precision and climate-smart agriculture.

Participants were also given an educational tour around the research station, featuring various agricultural technologies, research facilities, and innovative farming systems that support sustainable and climate-resilient agricultural production.

Activities such as this strengthen collaboration among institutions, encourage knowledge exchange, and promote the continuous advancement of technology-driven agriculture toward improved productivity and resilient farming communities.

Promoting sustainable gardening and community empowerment within correctional facilities ๐ŸŒฑ

On May 21, 2026, the BPI-BNCRDPSC NUPAP conducted a site assessment at the BJMP-Kalinga District Jail to support the Persons Deprived of Liberty (PDLs) in their goal of establishing sustainable gardening initiatives. During the visit, the team discussed possible interventions, technical assistance, and services that the office can provide to help strengthen their urban agriculture efforts and contribute to food productivity and rehabilitation activities within the facility.
