MED GIAHS MED GIAHS is a transfer project co-funded by the Interreg Euro-MED programme focused on the development of the GIAHS sites through a sustainable tourism.

MED-GIAHS is a transfer project co-funded by the Interreg Euro-MED programme focused on the development of the GIAHS sites through a sustainable tourism. GIAHS is the acronym for Globally Important Agricultural Heritage Systems (GIAHS). This recognition is awarded by the Food and Agriculture Organisation of the United Nations (FAO) and refers to agroecosystems inhabited by communities that live in

an intricate relationship with their territory. Currently there are around 80 GIAHS sites all over the world. MED-GIAHS involves the majority of those in the Mediterranean, pursuing the creation of a GIAHS Sites network in order to preserve and foster GIAHS production systems by rebuilding and redefining tourism in a new and more sustainable way. Last and 4th Interregional Seminar at he San Francesco Museum in Trevi (Italy) to present the resulta of the project, present the strategic documents, the Joint Catalogue of Agricultural Experiences in GIAHS sites and the Joint Training Plan for GIAHS sites.

This morning we had the opportunity to visit the Franciscan monastic complex of the FAI site and get to know the link between historical olive growing and the Franciscan orders, a reminder of GIAHS sites as a combination of an ancient agricultural production system, knowledge, landscape, culture, a way of living, architecture…Also, we could taste this special olive oil.

We are getting to the end of the project and the municipality of Trevi and the Olive Groves of the slopes between Assisi and Spoleto GIAHS site, in Italy are hosting the final events.

We have started with the 3rd Study visits of the project by walking along the olive trees and getting to know a bit of the ancestral knowledge of the cultivation of these olives trees and the production of of this unique olive oil. Thanks to for your hospitality.

Also today we have held our 5th and last Steering Committee. Congratulation to all partners for the job done during the project.

Trevi is getting ready to host one of the most important moments of the project: the official launch of the MED-GIAHS Network.

On November 21, during the Interregional Seminar, the main results achieved and the tools shared by all participating territories will be presented.

🌿 Highlights include:

• Presentation of the MED-GIAHS Network technical protocol.
• Presentation of the Mediterranean strategy for sustainable agricultural tourism.
• Release of the MED-GIAHS Sustainable agricultural tourism experiences Joint Catalogue and the Joint Guide for GIAHS Action Plans.
• Updates on the Training Plan and the pedagogical guide.
• Session on the project’s impact and the future of GIAHS sites and candidates.

📍 The countdown begins for the big MED-GIAHS gathering in Trevi!

From November 20 to 22, Italy will host the project’s Final Conference, alongside the 5th Steering Committee, the 4th Interregional Seminar, and the 3rd Study Visit. A space where administrations, experts, and GIAHS territories will share progress, strategies, and the project’s legacy.

🔍 Highlights of the program include:

• Agricultural experiences on Trevi’s olive terraces, with tastings and activities at the Zappelli farm.
• Cultural tours in Assisi, including a visit to the Bosco di San Francesco and the land art work Third Paradise.
• Key meetings on project evaluation, communication, carbon footprint, and financial closure.
• An intensive final day focused on the project’s impact and the prospects of the new MED-GIAHS Network.

Partners will present the project’s results to local stakeholders who will also work on how to influence public policies to improve the sustainable socioeconomic development of the GIAHS sites or potential GIAHS sites through the adoption of new methods of using its heritage resources and marketing.
