Our Story

The name Soroptimist means “the best for women” and that is what this organization strives to achieve. Soroptimist is an international organization of business and professional women who work to improve the lives of women and girls, in our local communities and throughout the world. Through the Soroptimist organization, the members of SI Tampa are connected to over 72,000 Soroptimists in 121 countries around the world who volunteer time and contribute financial support to community-based and international projects. Worldwide, Soroptimists are women of different professions, different nationalities, different cultures and races, different languages—but we share a common goal to improve the lives of women and girls. Soroptimists believe that the one of the best ways for a woman to improve her status in life is through education, and our signature project is the Soroptimist Live Your Dream Award which assists women by giving them the resources they need to improve their education, skills and job prospects. Each year more than 1500 women receive $2 million in award grants throughout our Soroptimist federation. Soroptimists work to improve the lives of all women by addressing issues like violence against women, human rights, and gender equality. As a NGO to the United Nations Economic and Social Council, Soroptimist representatives attend UN meetings and conferences at all the major UN centers to advocate for women and make our voices heard.
