Learning about the natural world around us is critical to safe guarding our future. Simple things in ecology even those thought to be beneficial, can lead to counter intuitive mistakes, and in fact do the opposite of what you intend. That is why actually learning about the species, habitats and ecosystem processes around us is so important. Currently there is really only investment in development and exploitation of natural resources. Investment in the conservation of nature may not have a tangible outcome in your lifetime, but it will for you children and grandchildren. There are many species that we track that tell us about the state of our world. This is one in the river. There are many others who are losing their homes even in “protected” areas.
