👏🏼 WELL DONE KRIS 👏🏼

Yarmouth RNLI volunteer, Kris McGuire successfully completed his Tier 1 pass-out on Yarmouth 17-25 ‘Eric and Susan Hiscock ’Wanderer’’ All Weather Lifeboat (ALB) last night! (Thursday 11th June)

This pass out for Kris goes towards his qualifications gained in the RNLI operational competency framework (OCF) which is an integral structure for RNLI volunteer’s training which can take them from joining all the way through to other key all-weather lifeboat roles such as deputy coxswain, deputy mechanic and navigator.

As part of the assessment, Kris had to demonstrate knowledge and understanding in a wide range of key operational tasks—including towing, anchoring, mooring, and casualty care. He also had to show an understanding of emergency protocols, and local operating procedures.

Kris said ‘The training has been well structured from start to finish, providing a solid foundation of skills and experience. Passing out as Tier 1 crew is a real achievement, and I’m incredibly grateful for all the support, guidance and encouragement from the whole crew. I’m proud to be able to contribute to the RNLI’s lifesaving work.’

CONGRATULATIONS KRIS 🎉

At the end of last month, our amazing fundraising team hosted Yarmouth’s first (and hopefully not the last!) ladies night fashion show at the Yarmouth Sailing Club!

The night was a roaring success and was enjoyed by all and a total of £765 was raised to help continue the RNLI’s lifesaving work.

☀️ Enjoying this half term heatwave? ☀️

If you’re thinking of heading to the beach this week, please share our lifesaving advice to help us keep people safe 📢

We are asking you to remember one thing if you're by the water:

- Tilt your head back with your ears submerged
- Relax and try to breathe normally
- Move your hands and legs to help you stay afloat
- It’s OK if your legs sink, we all float differently
- Once your breathing is under control, call for help or swim to safety.

Enjoy and stay safe 🥵

🏃‍♂️ MAYDAY MILE 🏃‍♂️

Kris and Adey are currently on mile 23 out of 31 and between them have raised over £500 for the RNLI!! 🤩

They’ve ran the mile in the mornings, after work in the evenings and have even gone for the mile run after attending a 3am lifeboat shout!

There’s still time to donate before they hit the final mile next Sunday, but in the meantime you can enjoy just a small selection of the photos they’ve been sending through each day! 🤣

It’s been so lovely seeing and hearing all the wonderful comments of support you have been sending through! The horn beeps as you drive pass and the cheers as they run through the town and over Yarmouth Bridge have really motivated the pair! 💪🏼
(especially when the weathers been a bit rubbish for them!) 🌧️

🌊 LIFEJACKET CLINIC PREP 🌊

The Yarmouth RNLI Water Safety team recently spent a very interesting and productive morning at SeaSafe, the UK's leading manufacturer of water safety equipment, learning the finer points of lifejacket inspections.

Lifejackets are a vital way to save lives but only if they are worn and they work.

Sadly, 80% of the lifejackets we inspect have issues of one kind or another.

Our next lifejacket clinic will be on Friday 22nd May at Yarmouth Harbour.

Come and see us for advice or an inspection!

🌟CONGRATULATIONS JO🌟

Huge congratulations to Jo who, last night (Wednesday 13th May), successfully completed her Tier 2 passout. 🎉

This was Yarmouth’s second female tier two pass out in less than a month!

Jo’s assessment consisted of a 3 hour theory and practical assessment covering watchkeeping, seamanship, navigation, helming, and casualty location and recovery under the watchful eye of Coastal Lifeboat Trainer, Peter.
Big thanks to Peter for coming over and supporting Jo’s training journey!

This is the culmination of several months of structured training, mostly under the RNLI’s Operational Competence Framework (OCF), covering all aspects required of a volunteer to be a crew member on Yarmouth’s Severn class All-weather Lifeboat (ALB).

Tom Carlstedt-Duke, Lifeboat Operations Manager at Yarmouth, said “Many congratulations to Jo on achieving this significant milestone. It is a result of a great deal of effort, backed up by the complete Yarmouth crew who worked with her, trained her and also continually assessed her development.”

📟 SERVICE UPDATE 10/05/2026 📟

On May 10, the pagers sounded for Yarmouth RNLI crews to assemble just before 3am to the reports of a yacht in difficulty near the Needles Lighthouse.

At the request of HM Coastguard, Yarmouth RNLI launched around fifteen minutes after the initial tasking and made best speed to the last known location of a sailing yacht with two people on board who had lost all power and were unable to make passage due to a main rigging malfunction.

Yarmouth RNLI arrived on scene, five miles west of the Needles Lighthouse at 4:20am and transferred a member of the crew across to assess the situation, and offer casualty care if required.

Due to the increasing strong winds, drift rate, and the lack of power to the casualty vessel which resulted in no navigation lights, the decision was made to tow the yacht back towards the safety of Yarmouth Harbour where the crew on board could rest, and organise mechanical assistance during the day.

Yarmouth's All-weather Lifeboat began the passage back to Yarmouth and brought the yacht alongside in the harbour just after 6am.

After post recover checks, and assisting the casualty crew, Yarmouth RNLI was marked as ready for service at around 6:30am.

(Shortly after returning to Yarmouth, two of our volunteers, after being part of the crew for this shout, seized the opportunity and completed their 10th mile in their MayDay Mile fundraiser - well done Adey and Kris!) 👏🏼

From all of us at Yarmouth Lifeboat Station, we extend our heartfelt condolences to our fellow search and rescue colleagues at Marine Rescue NSW, following the tragic incident in Ballina, Australia.

The loss of their two volunteers is felt on a global scale and is a sobering reminder of the immense danger search and rescue volunteers face every day at sea. We recognise the profound impact tragedies like this have on families, crews and communities. Our thoughts are with them all.

We honour the courage, commitment and selflessness of those involved, and of everyone who dedicates their lives to saving lives at sea. They will not be forgotten. Fair winds and following seas 💙
