The City of Houston is currently working on passing a new sidewalk ordinance aimed at making the community more walkable. Under this ordinance, contractors can either build sidewalks as part of their developments or pay a fee in lieu of construction. These fees are intended to be used to fill in sidewalk gaps throughout the city. In our area, students from Sterling High School are forced to walk in the street to access the community’s newest subdivisions. We propose that either the fees collected or the upcoming development be used to install sidewalks in the proposed area to ensure pedestrian safety.
