Today marks 25 years since the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks.

The City of Tacoma joins communities across our nation in remembering the nearly 3,000 lives lost, honoring the courage and sacrifice of first responders, and recognizing all those whose lives were forever changed by the events of that day.

Twenty-five years later, we remember. We honor. We will never forget.

This week for Workforce Development Month, we’re highlighting the Tacoma Training & Employment Program (TTEP). TTEP supports Tacoma residents by connecting them with job training, career navigation, and employment opportunities in high-growth fields. Participants can receive customized plans, financial support for training, and direct connections to employers who are actively hiring.

So far, TTEP has helped 84 participants access training and supported residents in securing employment and advancing their careers with graduates earning up to $46 per hour. Ready to take the next step in your career? Explore these programs and enroll!

Join us on Saturday, September 19 for a city-wide cleanup event across Tacoma from 10 a.m. to noon! The headline cleanup location is in Downtown Tacoma along Commerce St. and Pacific Ave. between South 24th and 25th Streets. Our Tidy-Up Tacoma crews are partnering with community-led litter cleanup groups, Litter Free 253 and Oscar's Enemies. Volunteers are welcome to join the effort here or at any of the 10 other sites around the city. Bags, gloves & litter picking equipment will be provided at every site. 🚧 Update: Due to repairs being completed early the Hylebos Bridge will reopen at 5 PM and will not be closed tomorrow as expected. Thank you for your patience.

🚧 Heads up, Tacoma: the Hylebos Bridge is scheduled to be closed from 7 AM–5 PM, September 8–10, while crews perform a routine structural inspection.

Traffic control signage and notice boards will be in place, and access to local businesses will be maintained. Drivers are encouraged to plan, use alternate routes, and allow extra travel time.

If you're building your Ready-in-a-Year plan with us, it's time for your September tip! This month, we're preparing some essentials to tuck under the bed.

Why store things under the bed?
🛌 Storing these items under the bed makes them ready to grab if an emergency or disaster strikes in the middle of the night.
🚪 If you don't have room under your bed, find another place that's easily accessible to you like a closet or dresser drawer.

Some basics to store under the bed:
🥾 Sturdy shoes that can safely carry you across broken glass and debris
🧤Work gloves so you can move that glass and debris
🔦 Flashlight or glow stick so you can navigate in the dark
🤔 What else do you have in your under-the-bed preparedness kit?

Starting Monday, September 14, Tacoma will activate two new automated speed enforcement cameras as part of our Vision Zero commitment to safer streets. A one‑month warning period begins at launch, followed by citations for continued speeding. These locations were selected due to high rates of speeding and serious crashes.
The first cameras to become operational are located on:
🔷 Norpoint Way NE (one camera monitoring the uphill direction)
🔷 State Route 509/Marine View Drive (one camera monitoring the southbound direction)
