📊 ICYMI: SA’s economy is still highly concentrated and small business participation remains limited.
What the Commission’s 2nd Concentration Report shows:
• Concentration remains high across many sub-sectors (228 assessed).
• Some progress: concentration is declining in most sectors.
• MSMEs = 97% of firms, but only 22% of turnover.

South Africa’s economy is still highly concentrated and that can limit growth, competitiveness and job creation. Today, the Competition Commission released its 2nd Concentration Report, based on data from 450,000 tax-registered firms (2017-2021). Commissioner Doris Tshepe handed the report over to dtic Minister Parks Tau. “We use this evidence to guide enforcement, policy development and market inquiries,” said Commissioner Tshepe. The Competition Commission has referred a complaint against MultiChoice and Altech to the Competition Tribunal for prosecution. The Commission alleges that MultiChoice and Altech entered into an agreement in 2014 that prevented Altech from competing in the pay-TV market where MultiChoice operates, conduct that may amount to market division in contravention of the Competition Act.
