WHAT WE DO:
The key to developing a world-wide collaboration for solving global problems begins with citizen diplomats around the world seeking a deeper understanding about each other’s cultures and the challenges we share. That is what is so special and unique about ICDLA’s work. By arranging opportunities for international emerging leaders to speak candidly with local business and civic leaders in their offices, share meals with ICDLA members in their homes, and see Los Angeles’s rich cultural mix first-hand, they experience the true Los Angeles - the true United States. They form opinions based on facts - opinions they will share back home - opinions important to our security. WHY WE DO IT:
There are good people all around the world who are working on projects to help solve the world’s toughest problems. Through ICDLA’s programs they are brought together so their good intentions and ideas can flourish. It may sound naïve to say the important exchanges ICDLA arranges can build a more peaceful world, but we believe creating dialogue between emerging leaders around the globe may be our only hope in these difficult times we live in! For example, determining how and why terrorist organizations are able to recruit young people must become a world-wide effort. Only by ebbing the stream of new recruits can we end the plague of violent extremism. To this end, ICDLA recently arranged meetings for a German IVLP participant who runs a national hotline for family and friends of those who may be at risk of radicalization. She came here to look at community engagement strategies, school projects and rehabilitations programs. Her first-hand experience with local L.A. programs such as Homeboy Industries, which works to rehabilitate gang members and to keep young people out of gangs, allowed her to gain valuable insights to aid her in her work at home. When a scientist from the Ministry of Environment, Forests and Climate Change in India came to Los Angeles as an IVLP participant, ICDLA arranged a meeting with the City of L.A.’s Chief Sustainability Officer to discuss L.A.’s first-ever Sustainable City pLAn. This type of international dialogue awakens new ideas and possibilities for joint efforts to tackle issues like climate change which affects us all. These connections foster international collaborations enabling great people to do even greater things. This is why, more than ever, ICDLA stands strong in its dedication to create international understanding and cooperation between the L.A. region and the rest of the world for the betterment of our community, our country, and our world.

What makes a Smart Port? As our IVLP participants discovered, it's not just cutting-edge technology - it's how innovation, people, and partnerships come together to build safer, more resilient, and more efficient ports. ⚓

During visits to the Port of Los Angeles and the Port of Hueneme, our delegation explored two very different port models, each demonstrating how technology can strengthen operations, improve security, and keep global trade moving. 🌎🚢

From the scale and advanced digital systems of the Port of Los Angeles to the innovative, community-focused approach of the Port of Hueneme, participants saw that every port has valuable lessons to share. While each faces unique opportunities and challenges, both highlighted the importance of adapting to a rapidly evolving global maritime industry. 💡

There's something special about watching these conversations unfold in person. Our local partners have the chance to share what makes Southern California's ports leaders in global trade, while our visitors bring their own experiences, perspectives, and questions to the table. By the end of the day, everyone walks away with new ideas, and that's exactly what makes international exchanges so meaningful. 🤝

It was perfect timing that the 14th Annual Global Supply Chain Excellence Summit was taking place at the same time our IVLP group was here to discuss Smart Ports Technology. ⚓ Thank you to the Summit’s host, the Randall R. Kendrick Global Supply Chain Institute at the USC Marshall School of Business, for making it possible for our group representing 18 countries 🌎 to attend. They were blown away - and not only by the Trojan Marching Band. 🎺 😄

They were thrilled with the opportunity to explore the latest trends in global logistics, AI, supply chain resilience, trade, sustainability, and port innovation while connecting with experts shaping the future of global commerce. 🚢💡🌱

The conversations won't end in Long Beach. The strategies, ideas, and connections sparked at the Summit will travel across the globe 🌐, helping inform smarter, safer, and more sustainable ports in communities around the world. That's the power of international exchange: one meeting-conversation-discussion can create ripple effects far beyond where it begins. 🤝

An IVLP delegation from Australia, Brunei, Egypt, Malawi, Romania, and Thailand visited Torrance City Hall to learn how the City of Torrance and its partners support entrepreneurship, workforce development, and long-term economic growth. 📈

Through conversations with local government officials, business leaders, and economic development experts, participants explored how public-private partnerships, innovative programs such as Pitch Torrance, and cross-sector collaboration help businesses succeed. 🤝💼

Thank you to the City of Torrance, our community partners, and ICDLA Board Member Jon Kaji for his assistance in facilitating the meeting. 🙏 Together, we continue building international connections through the exchange of ideas and best practices. 💡🌍

As the legendary Mother Road celebrates its 100th anniversary, ICDLA is happy to be featured in the Global Ties U.S. National Route 66 Roundup. 🛣️

Our contribution highlights IVLP music professionals from Azerbaijan, Japan, Nicaragua, Nigeria, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and Taiwan, who stopped for the classic “End of the Trail” photo at Santa Monica Pier after a full day of music-focused meetings at the Grammy Museum and UCLA Herb Alpert School of Music. 🎶 Over the years, many other international participants have enjoyed visiting Santa Monica Pier, and no visit is complete without that classic photo. 📷

As Los Angeles prepares for the LA28 Olympic and Paralympic Games, planning extends far beyond the competition itself. 🏅

During an IVLP program, members of the National Olympic Committee of Indonesia 🇮🇩 visited UCLA to learn how the university is preparing to serve as the official Olympic and Paralympic Athlete Village. The delegation also met with Terri Batch, President and CEO of Global LA, to explore how Los Angeles is leveraging LA28 to attract foreign direct investment, create business opportunities, and strengthen its position as a global hub for sports, culture, and innovation. 💼 💡

From campus operations and security to global partnerships and regional development, the visit highlighted how major sporting events can leave a lasting legacy that extends well beyond the Games.🌎 🤝🏟️

This Fourth of July holds special significance as we commemorate 250 years since the signing of the Declaration of Independence, a milestone that honors the values of freedom, responsibility, and the hope of equal opportunity for everyone. ✨

As we celebrate this historic anniversary, we also recognize the strength that has come from bringing people together across cultures, backgrounds, and borders. At ICDLA, we are proud to advance citizen diplomacy by fostering international understanding, meaningful dialogue, and lasting global connections. 🌎🤝

For one evening, the score wasn't the only thing that mattered. ⚽

The FIFA World Cup reminds us that while hundreds of thousands of international guests may arrive wearing different colors, speaking different languages, and cheering for different teams, they often leave having found something in common. 🎉

At our USA 🇺🇸 vs. Türkiye 🇹🇷Match Day at the Garden, football became more than a game. It became an opportunity for business leaders, chamber members, international professionals, and football fans to gather together and celebrate the diversity that makes Los Angeles one of the world's great international cities.

ICDLA was honored to join the British American Business Council (BABC Los Angeles), Italy-America Chamber of Commerce West, Los Angeles, GABA Southern California - German American Business Association (GABA), Swiss-American Chamber of Commerce - Los Angeles, Czech Chamber of Commerce, and the .S.-US-Mexico Chamber of Commerce, California Regional Chapter, along with Rossoblu Italian Restaurant and Airbnb, for an evening that reflected the true spirit of citizen diplomacy. 🤝

The World Cup has a remarkable way of reminding us that curiosity travels farther than competition, conversations outlast the final whistle, and the strongest connections often begin with something as simple as cheering side by side.

At ICDLA, we believe every shared meal, every new conversation, and every cross-cultural connection helps build a more understanding and connected world.

Every June 19th, we commemorate ‘Juneteenth’, the day in 1865 when news of emancipation reached some of the last enslaved Americans in Texas. This day marks a pivotal moment in the American pursuit of freedom and justice. 🤝

At ICDLA, we believe that truly meaningful citizen diplomacy must acknowledge history, embrace cultural exchange, and foster solidarity across communities and nations. This Juneteenth, we reaffirm our commitment to creating a future where everyone has the opportunity to thrive. 🌟

In honoring this important day, we reflect on the resilience, contributions, and enduring legacy of the African-American community. Juneteenth is not only a remembrance of the past, but a call to continue advancing equity, understanding, and opportunity for all. 🌎
