MAY 31: Solemnity of the Most Holy Trinity
Today, we celebrate the Solemnity of the Most Holy Trinity — Father, Son, and Holy Spirit — the mystery at the heart of our faith. After the Easter Season ended with Pentecost, the Church invites us to reflect on God’s closeness: the Father who sent prophets and His only Son, Jesus; the Son who revealed the Father’s face and opened the way to eternal life through His death and resurrection; and the Spirit, the first gift poured into our hearts so we may live as children of God. This feast is a synthesis of the journey we have lived from Christmas to Easter, reminding us that God is not distant, but walks with us.
The Scriptures proclaim this truth: “The Lord, the Lord, a God gracious and merciful, slow to anger and abounding in love and fidelity” (Ex. 34:6). In Jesus, the Word made flesh, we see the Father’s love — not to condemn the world, but to save it (Jn. 3:16-18). The Trinity reveals a God who is faithful, merciful, and near, nourishing us with His very self in the Eucharist, the Bread of Life. As Saint Paul exhorts, we are called to live in peace, to share Christ’s sentiments, and to walk with others in love (2 Cor. 13:11-13).
This Solemnity is not only a doctrine to profess but a life to embody. Enlivened by the Spirit, let us mirror God’s care and closeness, becoming neighbors to one another, living in communion, and bearing witness to the joy of being disciples of the crucified and risen Jesus. May our prayer echo Saint Hilary of Poitiers: “Until my last breath, grant me this voice of my conscience, that I may be ever faithful to what I professed when I was baptized in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.”
