Today, Abington chose connection over assumption.

The Abington Human Relations Commission was proud to partner with Abington Township Public Library to host today’s Human Library, a powerful experience rooted in listening, empathy, and shared humanity.

Community members had the opportunity to engage in real conversations with our Human Books individuals who bravely shared their lived experiences around disability, immigration, recovery, caregiving, faith, military service, homelessness, LGBTQ plus identity, and more. These stories were not about labels but about people.

Each conversation reminded us that when we take time to listen, we break down fear, reduce bias, and build a more compassionate and inclusive community.

We are deeply grateful to every Human Book who entrusted us with their story and to every participant who showed up with openness and respect. You made this day meaningful.

Thank you to Abington Township Public Library for being a true partner in creating space for dialogue, dignity, and understanding.

Together, we are building an Abington where everyone belongs.

At a Human Library, readers and books come together in a safe, respectful space designed to explore topics that are often misunderstood or shaped by bias. There’s no agenda, no debate to win—just the opportunity to listen, ask thoughtful questions, and learn directly from someone’s lived experience.

This Sunday, February 1, from 1–4 PM, you’re invited to join us at the Abington Township Free Library. With 16 human books available, you can take part in multiple 25-minute conversations throughout the afternoon.

We’re proud and excited to co-host a second Human Library event this Sunday with our partners at the Abington Township Free Library.

The Human Library is an internationally recognized program that began in Denmark in 2000 and is now hosted in more than 80 countries worldwide. Its purpose is simple and powerful: to challenge stereotypes and prejudice through respectful, one-on-one conversation.

At this event, community members become human books—each one sharing their lived experience. Visitors are invited to check out a book for a conversation, ask honest questions, and gain a deeper, more human understanding of experiences they may not encounter in everyday life.

AHRC

Abington Township and the AHRC recognize the inherent dignity and worth of all people. Therefore, the AHRC strives to ensure, through education, mediation, and community outreach, that all members of the community enjoy equality and equal protection under the law.

Abington Township prohibits discrimination in housing, commercial property, employment, and public accommodations on the basis of actual or perceived race, color, religious creed, ancestry, s*x, national origin, handicap or disability, use of guide or support animals because of the blindness, deafness or physical handicap of the user or because the user is a handler or trainer of support or guide animals, or because of an individual’s actual or perceived s*xual orientation, gender identity or gender expression. Note that most religious, fraternal, educational, and charitable organizations are exempt from complying with the discrimination requirements of the Abington Township ordinance.

AHRC is comprised of seven volunteer Township residents appointed by the Board of Commissioners. It is non-partisan and provides all of its services free of charge. The AHRC also offers several community outreach programs to Township organizations and businesses to explain the Ordinance and offer suggestions that can assist in avoiding problems and making our Township a better place to live and work. We are here to help you.
