📚 There’s something special about sitting down with a child and opening a book together.

In my work with Bread and Water for Africa®, I’ve had the opportunity to meet children who are eager to learn and excited about their education.

Literacy gives them a foundation to keep learning, express their ideas, and pursue new opportunities as they grow. Yet around the world, 4 in 10 children are still not reaching minimum proficiency in reading.

That’s one of the reasons education is so important to me and to our work. Through our local partners, we help students facing financial barriers with school fees, supplies, transportation, and other educational needs so they have the opportunity to stay in school and keep learning.

This International Literacy Day, we’re celebrating all the young readers we’ve had the privilege to meet—and the teachers, families, partners, and supporters helping them continue their education. 📚🧡

🧡 Today is International Day of Charity—and we’re celebrating the people who make our work possible.

Because of our supporters, Bread and Water for Africa® can work alongside local partners providing clean water, education, healthcare, food, and other essential resources to communities across Africa.

Every gift becomes part of that work.

Today, we simply want to say thank you for choosing to make a difference with us. 🧡

Welcome to Chad!

This September, we’re kicking off a new series at Bread and Water for Africa®: Country of the Month.

Each month, we’ll introduce you to one of the countries where our partners work—not just through our programs, but through its food, languages, landscapes, cultures, and people.

First stop: Chad.

Throughout the month, we’ll also share more about the work Bread and Water for Africa® has supported there for more than a decade.

👉 Swipe through for a quick introduction and follow along as we explore Chad throughout September!

What can happen when a child has the opportunity to stay in school year after year? 📖 ✏️

In Chad, we’re beginning to see the answer.
For more than a decade, Bread and Water for Africa® supporters have helped vulnerable children and youth continue their education by covering school fees, exam fees, uniforms, and other essentials.

Today, some of those students are reaching impressive milestones. Three former scholarship recipients recently graduated from university in Midwifery, Nursing, and Nutrition.

And hundreds more are still working toward their own goals.

🧡 Our work across Africa starts with the people who know their communities best.
The teachers educating the next generation. The healthcare workers caring for their neighbors. The farmers sharing their knowledge. The local leaders turning ideas into action.

On International Day for People of African Descent, we celebrate the contributions of people of African descent around the world—and we're especially grateful for the people and partners across Africa we have the privilege of working alongside. 🌍

💬 Help us celebrate them today!

In Memory of Dolly Parton ❤️

Today, we join so many around the world in remembering Dolly Parton.

Beyond the music and joy she shared, Dolly believed deeply in giving back and used her success to support causes that changed lives.

Her generosity reached far beyond the stage, supporting children, education, healthcare and communities in need. At Bread and Water for Africa®, we honor a life that demonstrated the extraordinary impact of giving back.

Our thoughts are with her family, friends, and all those mourning her loss. ❤️

🎓 School fees. A uniform. Transportation. A pair of shoes.

None of these things determine how much potential a student has. But without them, continuing an education can become much harder—or even impossible.
And just look at what can happen when those barriers are removed. 🧡 This young student at Watoto Wa Africa Orphanage is proudly holding her Primary School Learning Certificate—a milestone worth celebrating!

That’s why we help provide the practical support students need to stay in school and keep moving forward.

🧡 Janeth was just 6 years old when she came to Watoto Wa Africa Orphanage.

She had lost both of her parents and needed a place to call home. At WWAO, she
found one—and people who continued to believe in her as she grew.
Now 19, Janeth is pursuing her secondary education and thinking about how she can one day help other children.

As she puts it:
“Because people believed in me, I now believe in myself.”
That’s the kind of long-term support our partners at WWAO provide: a safe home, care, education, and people who stay in a child’s corner. 🧡

💬 Leave Janeth some encouragement as she continues working toward graduation!

📚 Education can open the door to so much—but first, students need the opportunity to stay in school.

This year, Bread and Water for Africa® is helping 83 students at Watoto Wa Africa Orphanage in Tanzania continue their education by supporting school fees, transportation, and other educational costs.

For these students, that support means fewer financial barriers standing between them and the future they’re working toward. 🧡

🌍 On World Humanitarian Day, we're celebrating the people who show up for their communities every day.

The teachers watching over a student's progress. The social workers helping identify children who need support. The caregivers encouraging them at home. The community leaders looking out for their neighbors.

And local organizations understand their communities because 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝘆 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗽𝗮𝗿𝘁 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗺.
Today, help us say THANK YOU to the people doing this work every day.
