Last but not least, we owe a huge debt of gratitude to our own State Representative Pete Johnson. Pete is an active Duluth firefighter, president of Local 101, and the MPFF Northern District VP.

Finishing up his first term in office as Representative for District 8A, Pete has wasted no time advancing the interests of Minnesota’s firefighters and of organized labor. Pete has spearheaded pension improvement bills, added cancer to the eligible causes for the PSOB, created a task force for standardized first responder IDs, and pushed for additional protections for other groups of workers in the state.

Pete’s work shows why it’s so important for your union to stay involved in politics. When we have the voice of a firefighter in the conversation about crafting life-changing legislation for firefighters, we can trust that our experience is being represented well.

Thank you Pete, for your service to your city, union, state and fellow firefighters everywhere.

State Representative Zack Stephenson, DFL Caucus Leader, and Speaker of the House Representative Lisa Demuth were both essential figures in advancing our pension legislation this session. Their partnership in support of this bipartisan bill serves as a reminder that we are well-aligned with lawmakers from both sides of the aisle. We recognize that the best way to serve our members is to build relationships with those who are willing to stand up for Minnesota’s firefighters in a meaningful way.

Thank you Rep. Stevenson and Speaker Demuth for your support!

Senator Nick Frentz and Representative Leon Lillie have both showed strong support for Minnesota’s firefighters by introducing the pension bill that reduced the wait time for a retirees first COLA from 24 months to 12. This change brings parity with other state retirement plans, and is a key way we protect the buying power of retirees against rising inflation.

Thank you Sen. Frentz and Rep. Lillie for your continued support and investment in a strong pension system for Minnesota’s firefighters and police officers.

We would like to thank Senate Majority Leader Erin Murphy for her support on our pension and PSOB bills this session. In addition to offering her vote in favor of these bills, Sen. Murphy helped them find their way on the sometimes maze-like journey through the legislature. Her experience was integral to getting these bills passed into law.

Thank you Majority Leader Murphy! Sen. Murphy is pictured below at Saint Paul Fire Station 7, where she received an award in appreciation of her years of legislative advocacy for Minnesota’s firefighters.

Representative Tim O’Driscoll has been a longtime ally of the firefighters, especially when it comes to our pension. Rep. O’Driscoll is a seasoned member of the Legislative Commission on Pensions and Retirement, which recommends pension-related bills for passage by the legislature.

Rep. O’Driscoll has always been a good partner to us—someone who is willing to listen to Minnesota’s firefighters and work together to find a solution. We wish Rep. O’Driscoll a long, healthy and happy retirement. Thank you Tim for your service to your community and support of Minnesota’s fire service!

First in our series of shoutouts to state lawmakers that were key to getting pension increases and cancer presumption in the state PSOB is Senator Judy Seeberger !

Sen. Seeberger is a paramedic and firefighter herself, and she admirably brought that experience to her work at the Capitol this year. She knows firsthand what it means to do the job, and what resources our firefighters and paramedics need on the job and into their retirement.

Sen. Seeberger testified in direct support of the bill that added cancer as one of the eligible criteria for the state PSOB, and played a key role in advancing the bill that reduced the COLA wait period for Police and Fire retirees.

Thank you Senator for always being a fierce advocate for Minnesota’s firefighters!

Another huge legislative win for the MPFF! Governor Walz just signed the bill that will reduce the waiting period for PERA Police & Fire plan retirees to receive their first Cost of Living Adjustment, or COLA. Previously, new retirees needed to wait two years before receiving their first COLA—that time has been cut in half to twelve months.

Inflation is a major factor when it comes to the long term buying power of our retirees’ pensions. In multiyear stretches of high inflation, retirees watch their hard-earned pension income struggle to keep pace with rising costs of day to day life. Reducing the waiting time to receive a COLA helps to close that gap.

Securing a win like this one is no small feat in a bonding year, and is a testament to the tenacity of our officers, the relationships we build with our legislators, and those legislators’ commitment to supporting our members who have given decades in service to their communities.

Over the next week, we’ll be recognizing some of the lawmakers who led the effort on passing pension improvements and changes to the Minnesota PSOB—stay tuned!
