Jewish Family and Child Service A resilient community where hope, dignity, diversity and humanity thrive.

14/05/2026

Today, on Children and Youth in Care Day, we join in recognizing the strength, resilience, and voices of children and youth in and from care.

This year’s theme, Rising in Strength and Story, highlights the importance of empowering young people to define their own narratives and futures. Their experiences are only one part of who they are; their voices, achievements, and dreams matter just as much.

We’re proud to share this video from the Ontario Association of Children’s Aid Societies in honour of the day and to continue supporting children and youth as they grow, connect, and thrive. High food costs are one of the most difficult financial pressures Canadians have faced in recent years.

JF&CS food pantries help ensure that individuals and families who come to us for support have reliable access to kosher groceries and essential items.

We are grateful to the Elaine Harris Foundation for sponsoring May’s food pantries and helping ensure this support is there when it’s needed most.

💚 Together, we nourish hope, dignity and compassion.

This week, JF&CS was proud to serve as one of the host organizations for the Network of Jewish Human Service Agencies’ PowerNET 2026 in Toronto.

Under this year’s theme, Meeting the Moment, nearly 600 Jewish human service professionals from across North America and Israel came together to learn, collaborate, and strengthen the work that supports millions of individuals and families each year.

We’re especially proud of the many JF&CS staff members who shared their expertise as presenters and panel moderators throughout the conference, helping spark thoughtful conversations and meaningful action across the field.

Thank you to everyone who made this inspiring week possible.

Caring for our community starts with caring for our staff. 💚

To recognize Mental Health Awareness Week (May 4–10), we’re highlighting how JF&CS supports those who support others. When our staff feel valued and empowered, they can help build a stronger, more resilient community for everyone.

Through our Wellness Committee, we promote mental well-being with initiatives such as staff challah bakes, art-based activities, our weekly Wellness Walks and May’s 10K Step Challenge, Purim grams, and access to mental health supports, including an Employee and Family Assistance Program.

If you or someone you know is in need of support, our dedicated and compassionate social workers can help. Please contact our Intake Department at 416-638-7800, ext. 6234.

May 3-9 is National Hospice Palliative Care Week, and this year’s theme is Palliative Care Everywhere.

At JF&CS, our Hospice program provides compassionate, client-centred support to individuals and families navigating end-of-life and grief. Through counselling, advocacy, and connection, we help ensure no one faces this journey alone.

🌿 Did you know? JF&CS has a memorial garden in Earl Bales Park — a peaceful space for reflection and remembrance, lovingly maintained by volunteers from the Community Head Injury Resource Service of Toronto.

This week, we honour life, memory, and the power of thoughtful care.

May marks Canadian Jewish Heritage Month, a time to recognize and celebrate the history, culture, and enduring contributions of Jewish Canadians.

More than a celebration, this month is a symbol of recognition, education, and connection. We honour the generations of Jewish life in Canada and foster greater understanding and inclusion.

As a pillar of the Toronto and York Region communities, JF&CS plays a vital role in that story through supporting individuals and families and helping shape a strong, compassionate future for Canada’s Jewish population.

This week, we hosted an incredible, first-of-its-kind symposium: Equity in Action: Combating Antisemitism and Racism in Social Work.

This powerful day of learning brought together social workers from across the GTA and beyond to deepen understanding and drive meaningful action in addressing antisemitism and racism in practice, featuring a distinguished panel of experts.

Thank you to the Friends of Simon Wiesenthal Center for their partnership, and to moderator Zach Sadowski, Director of Antisemitism Programming and Outreach, for leading a thoughtful discussion.

We’re grateful to our speakers for sharing their insights and expertise, offering powerful reflections on intersectionality, identity within equity-deserving communities, and lived experiences: Jess Burke (Centre for Israel and Jewish Affairs - CIJA), Kalea Kirsh (NeuroInclusivity), and Tyler Samuels (ADRABA Toronto).

We’re honoured to receive support from the Canadian Race Relations Fdn / Fondation canadienne des relations raciales. Their support, made possible through funding from the Government of Canada, helps us make this important work possible.

We’re proud to share that JF&CS has received funding through Ontario’s Civil Remedies Grant Program, alongside Toronto Police Service and Victim Services Toronto.

The announcement was made by Attorney General Doug Downey and MPP Michelle Cooper, with Chief Myron Demkiw, Carly Kalish (CEO, Victim Services Toronto), and Talyah Breslin (CEO, JF&CS) in attendance.

At JF&CS, this investment will support specialized staff training in the Strength at Home program, an evidence-based approach that helps individuals take accountability, change harmful behaviours, learn safer ways to manage conflict, and build safer relationships.

At JF&CS, preventing violence means going beyond crisis response. This funding strengthens our ability to support both survivors while also helping to break the cycle of harm -- building safer families and healthier communities.

You don’t have to carry grief alone.

Join our Therapeutic Bereavement Group, a safe space to share, connect, and process your unique grief experience alongside others who understand.

Each participant is provided with an individual assessment prior to joining, ensuring the group is the right fit and that you’re supported in the best way possible. Learn therapeutic skills, gain evidence-based insight on bereavement, and engage in meaningful support and discussion, guided by experienced social workers.
