When I decided to run for the Pennsylvania House in District 122, I promised myself that this campaign would be built on straight answers rather than vague slogans, because Carbon County families deserve to know exactly what they're voting for.

An interesting take…

Local control is not just a zoning issue. It is an economic fairness issue. Land-use decisions affect much more than maps and ordinances. They affect who has power, who bears the costs, and who gets the benefits.

When local communities lose control over zoning, residents are often the ones who pay the price. They deal with the traffic, noise, water demands, environmental impacts, falling property enjoyment, and strain on local services. Meanwhile, the financial benefit may go primarily to outside developers, investors, or large corporations.

That is why local control is an issue of economic fairness. Does that sound fair to you?

People talk about the economy like everyone is experiencing the same thing.

But are we?

The middle class was built through homeownership, good local jobs, strong skills training, and communities having a real say in their own future.

But too many government policies today are weakening those very things.

That is how we end up with a K-shaped economy: one part of the economy rises, while another part falls behind.

Good governance should not make it harder for middle-income Americans to own homes, earn good wages, build skills, and stay rooted in their communities. And good governance should not put institutional interests ahead of the rights of individuals, families, and local communities.

Christian’s message is about putting the needed building blocks back in place: property tax reform, vocational education, blue-collar opportunity, local control, and family homeownership.

Our municipalities are being sued again and again by exploitative developers.

Right now, Penn Forest Township is dealing with three lawsuits related to data centers alone. The pressure being placed on local leaders is unbelievable.

Some developer lawsuits appear to be little more than pressure tactics and eventually get dropped. Others can tie municipalities up in court battles for years, sometimes even decades.

Why?

Because under Pennsylvania’s current land-use laws, municipalities often do not have a clear enough right to say no to unacceptable development.

The cost is enormous.

Millions of dollars spent. Local officials pulled away from the work of governing. Residents spending their retirement savings to protect their land and homes. Neighbors living with fear, stress, exhaustion, and uncertainty about what may happen to the places they love.

This may be treated as normal now.

But it is not acceptable.

Voters deserve a meaningful say in what happens to our own land, our own communities, and our own future. Our concerns about water, roads, power, health, safety, property values, and local control are serious. They deserve serious answers.

But too many establishment politicians seem comfortable leaving municipalities and residents to fight these battles alone.

Christian understands these land-use laws. He understands what is broken. And he knows what needs to change.

This month’s edition of 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐂𝐚𝐫𝐛𝐨𝐧 𝐂𝐨𝐮𝐧𝐭𝐲 𝐃𝐞𝐦𝐨𝐜𝐫𝐚𝐭 newsletter really got down to the heart of the choice before us.

More and more voters are realizing that the real fight is not simply between parties. It is between politics as usual and people who still believe our communities, our rights, our land, and our future are worth protecting.

And in that fight, our neighbors are not the problem. They are part of the solution.

Christian often talks about the fact that Democrats and Republicans agree on about 80% of most issues. We want safe and fairly funded schools. We want effective recovery solutions. We want a reasonable cost of living. We want communities to have a meaningful voice when unacceptable development threatens our land, water, health, and quality of life. We want emergency services that are suitably funded.

We may not agree on every issue. But most of us want government that listens, taxes that serve the public good, and leaders who are accountable to the people they represent. These are the issues that Christian addresses on the campaign trail - not as a political trick but as a deeply shared belief.

The article also made an interesting observation: Democrats do not always agree among themselves. Clearly, many Republicans are feeling the same way. People in both parties are feeling unheard by establishment politicians and concerned about the future of our county, our state, and our country. 🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸

That is why the article’s reminder feels so timely: the perfect should not become the enemy of the good.

Because the real question is not whether we agree on everything.

The real question is whether Carbon County will keep being asked to sacrifice its land, its voice, and its future for political priorities that do not serve us — or whether we will choose representation that puts Carbon County first.. 💫
