This Cheshire Day we're taking a moment to reflect on the arts and cultural events we have on our doorstep and our fabulous community volunteers who bring these to life.

Mike and I have commited to invest members budget in the summer reading challenge and are in conversation as to how we can further support arts and culture in our community.

A ยฃ6 million investment is planned to redevelop Frodsham Leisure Centre and bring modern, accessible health and community facilities alongside the library.

The proposals include:

When Mike Garvey and I were elected, we promised to push for improvements to Frodsham Leisure Centre. Itโ€™s great to see progress, with ยฃ6 million committed by Cheshire West and Chester Council and Brio to redevelop the site.

Have your say on the plans, the survey only takes around 5 minutes and helps shape how the new centre works for local people.

Letโ€™s make sure the new Brio Frodsham works for our whole community.

Big news for Brio Frodsham ๐Ÿ‘€

Weโ€™ve secured ยฃ6m to create a modern, fully accessible leisure and community space with a new gym, studios, social areas and upgraded sports facilities.

Before plans are finalised, we want your opinion!

Funding secured for vital council services in last nights budget meeting including ยฃ6m of funding to support enhancements at Frodsham Leisure Centre.

This is a budget that protects what matters most to you and your family. Despite huge pressures on council finances nationally, weโ€™ve worked hard to secure the future of the services our communities rely on.

Hereโ€™s what this budget delivers ๐Ÿ‘‡

We know how important accessible, affordable transport is, especially for older residents and those with disabilities. Weโ€™ve protected these services so people can stay connected to work, health appointments and their community.

Our cultural heart in Chester will continue to thrive. Storyhouse brings people together, supports jobs, and gives children and families access to arts and learning. Weโ€™re backing it for the future.

With support from the Government, weโ€™re releasing additional funding to repair roads and tackle potholes. That means safer journeys and better local infrastructure right across the borough.

Libraries are lifelines, warm, welcoming spaces for learning, advice and connection. We are keeping them open because opportunity should be available in every community.

Weโ€™ve secured funding for new boilers and major renovations in council homes. That means warmer, more energy-efficient homes and lower bills for tenants.

This budget balances responsibility with ambition. It bridges a significant funding gap while protecting frontline services and investing in our communities, as set out in the 2026โ€“27 Budget Report.

Weโ€™re choosing to protect people, safeguard opportunity and invest in pride in our borough. Thatโ€™s what Labour leadership looks like. ๐ŸŒน

Weโ€™ve been working closely with partners across Cheshire and beyond to manage the ongoing cold weather conditions.

๐ŸŒก๏ธ Temperatures have dropped as low as -12ยฐC in some areas overnight. A Yellow Met Office warning for snow and ice remains in place until midday, and an Amber Cold Health Alert continues until Friday 9 January.

๐Ÿ›ฃ๏ธ Gritting teams are out across the borough, though extremely low road temperatures are affecting salt effectiveness.

๐Ÿซ Some schools are closed and there are minor service delays, including household waste centres and care visits.

๐Ÿšจ Emergency services remain fully operational with low levels of weather-related incidents reported.

Cheshire West and Chester Councilโ€™s Severe Weather Emergency Protocol (SWEP) is now in place, providing emergency accommodation and support during extreme weather, cold or hot. We work closely with partners like ForFutures to offer warm beds, food, water and care to those in need.

Letโ€™s help everyone stay safe this winter. ๐Ÿ™

A huge thank you to our frontline teams, care workers, and community volunteers who are out there making a real difference.

Common myths about gritting...

Once the gritter has put salt on the road all ice will melt
โŒ False

Spreading salt on the road is only the start of the de-icing process. Movement of salt around the road by traffic is essential to complete the process. Overnight, when traffic levels are low, roads can remain icy for some time and people should take care.

Salting a road stops the formation of ice
โŒ False

Salt works by lowering the freezing temperature of water. This prevents ice or frost forming on the roads as it would otherwise, once the temperature of the road surface falls to 0ยฐC. Salt usually loses its effectiveness once the temperature falls below -5ยฐC and stops working at -10ยฐC. Pre-salting the road forms a separating layer so if snow falls it doesn't freeze onto the road surface and can be ploughed off or churned off by traffic.

Spreading salt on fresh snow will make it melt quicker
โŒ False

Salt only effectively melts snow when as much of it as possible is removed and traffic can move the salt around. To protect the road surface from ploughs we remove snow to around a depth of 20mm before spreading salt.

No matter what the temperature is, salt with melt ice
โŒ False

In the concentrations we use on our roads salt does not melt ice below minus 8ยฐC and is less effective at temperatures below minus 5ยฐC.

Don't clear your own drive or pathway or someone who falls could sue you
โŒ False

Anyone can clear snow and ice from the pavement outside their home or public spaces to prevent slips and falls - normal table salt will work. Don't be put off clearing paths because you're afraid someone will get injured. Remember, people walking on snow and ice have a responsibility to be careful themselves. To clear snow and ice safely, follow advice from the Met Office.

A gritter passed me but no salt was being spread
โŒ False

Salt no longer sprays in all directions, covering the windscreens of cars and the legs of pedestrians. Computer-controlled mechanics now dispense the required amount of salt directly down onto the road. They can also 'throw' the salt to one side or the other to ensure the whole carriageway is covered even if the vehicle is driving down one side only.

However, this is not always a myth as the vehicle may not have reached the starting point of its treatment route, or maybe returning to the depot at the end of its route or to refill.
