🐸 Toadpole Tuesday — Week 3
This is our last time dunking the camera into the tadpole pool.

What you’re seeing might look like green slime to some — but that algae covered rocky substrate is exactly what American Toad tadpoles need to survive. It’s their food source, their shelter, and their nursery. It’s not gross. It’s home.

We’ve loved sharing their journey with you but the best thing we can do for them now is leave them to it.

They’ve got legs, they’ve got a plan, and they don’t need us hovering.

We’ll keep checking in from the bank every Tuesday until the day they walk out of the water.

🥜 Hey mom!

Happy Mother’s Day from the LPT EAC.

In honor of all the moms out there…….we put out the peanuts today for the Blue Jays in LPT as they start one of the most incredible processes in the universe. Birth.

Jay moms across our watershed are preparing to incubate, hatch, and raise their young.

Jays are one of the most intelligent species of birds in America. Many of the birds you see here are stashing these peanuts in a not too far away tree in preparation for hatchlings.

They made quick work of our offering. An hour after we filled the feeder…..every single peanut was gone.

To every mom out there. Thank you for the life you have given us! We hope your day is as rewarding as the Jays. 🐦

🎣 Hoy Park Pier is open!
Just a friendly reminder that Hoy Park Pier has been open since April 20th — and it’s looking great.
For those who don’t know, the pier took a beating this past winter when some of its pylons lost their battle with the ice. Lower Providence Township got right on it and had everything repaired and back open by April 20th.

A big thank you to the township for handling this so quickly.

This pier means a lot to our community. Whether you’re fishing, watching the creek go by, or just soaking it in — your spot on the Perkiomen is waiting.

We checked in on our newest residents today and they’ve been busy.
Last week they were just tadpoles. This week some have legs. Tiny but unmistakable. The coolest transformation in nature, metamorphosis, is officially underway in the shallow pools of Skippack Creek.
For those just joining us — every Tuesday we will be checking in on this remarkable little colony as they transform from water breathing tadpoles into air breathing toads. One of nature’s most extraordinary processes happening right here in your backyard.
We’ll see you next Tuesday.

🌳 Meet one of the oldest residents of Lower Providence Township.

This American Sycamore has been standing on the banks of the Skippack Creek for at least 200 years — likely much longer.

How do we know? At 6’2” with a 6’7” wingspan — arms fully outstretched — I couldn’t get close to wrapping around this trunk. For a Sycamore, that kind of girth takes centuries.

It may not be “old growth.” But it’s our growth.

And we’re working to make sure it’s still standing when your grandchildren walk this trail.

Spring migration is in full swing and our backyard is proof. From resident Woodpeckers and Blue Jays to a surprise visit from a Yellow-rumped Warbler passing through on his way north — Lower Providence Township is living up to its Gold Certified Bird Town status one feeder visit at a time.

Every spring, thousands of American Toad tadpoles fill the shallow pools along Skippack Creek. This week we’re checking in on them and they are thriving.
These tiny swimmers are one of the first signs that the creek is doing its job. American Toads need clean, shallow water to breed and their tadpoles are sensitive to water quality. Finding them in these numbers is genuinely good news for the Skippack corridor.
We’ll be checking in on them weekly as they develop from toadpole to toadlet right before our eyes. You need not go any further than your own backyard to see some of Nature’s best reality show.
