Sharing some moments from the recent conference in Penang, Malaysia. After first two days of International Co-ordinating Body (ICB) where we discussed current issues/campaigns and upcoming plans, we attended the opening ceremony of the International Festival for People’s Rights abd Struggle (IFPRS) followed by really informative and engaging conference and workshops at the 7th Assembly of International League for People’s Struggles (ILPS). I had the privilege to deliver the report on commission 15 of the ILPS which is focussed on rights and welfare of migrants and diaspora displaced by imperialism and local reactionaries.

Wow. Just wow. What a thriller! It was a pendulum swing. India posted an above par score of 176 and then Bumrah and Arshdeep gave a perfect start to Indian bowling Innings. However, Klaseen and Miller made quick fire runs to put South Africa in great winning position only to lose it in the end (not the first time though). Many would say they delivered on the tag of chokers for losing many world cup games right towards the end stages. India held its nerves that brought us the win. Go India. Great final, great win. Hard luck to South Africa. They were the worthy finalists. India finally wins an ICC trophy since 2013 after losing last few close ones in semis and finals.

Who else is watching T20 World Cup Final India vs South Africa?. India lost early wickets but Kohli’s lived up to his reputation of scoring in big games like this. 176 is an above par score so now it’s our bowlers who need to bowl in the right areas and defend this score like they have done it throughout the world cup. Backing the Men in Blue.

Mikee Santos, Coordinator of Union Network of Migrants (UNEMIG) has criticised latest changes to AEWV. "Politicians loved migrant labour when we needed it most, but now we’ve moved into an austerity period under the new Government, they are turning their backs on migrant workers and giving them no chance to have a say about their futures," said Mr Santos.

Migrant workers had been welcomed to Aotearoa during the Covid-19 pandemic due to worker shortages, and the Government’s new changes would leave many migrant workers out of pocket and in the dark regarding future plans to bring family members to the ...

Afghanistan has done it. Hard luck to Bangladesh but Afghanistan needed the win to send Australia out of Semi-final of T20 Cricket World Cup. They are not minnows anymore. Well done to India and Afghanistan.

So sad to see that these migrants are treated this way. The system has failed to protect migrants and to prevent exploitation. It’s about time the government makes the changes to empower migrants and to hold these exploiters accountable.

A group of 19 Indian migrant workers claim they are being made to work in what they describe as slave-like conditions up to 17 hours per day with no pay at an Auckland chain restaurant. 👇

“they had been underpaid, or in some cases, not paid at all, received no holiday pay, no sick leave, no payslips or employment agreements, been given irregular hours, and paid well below their contracted rate.”

They paid huge premiums for their jobs, but nothing was what these seven migrants expected when they arrived in New Zealand,

Shame on such employers. Finally justice is served.

A seasoned chef with three decades of culinary experience and a flourishing business made a life-altering decision to relocate for his child’s future. What they got in New Zealand was not what they signed up for.

Please contribute whatever you can to show solidarity with migrant organisations and to help fight against exploiting employers.

As you may all be aware that Migrants Workers Association and Migrants Rights Network have been long volunteering their time to support Migrant communities in New Zealand.
These two organisations have always been a target for those employers who exploit their employees. One such employer has filed a defamation case against the two organisations.
We are kindly requesting support to fight this case as we will need a specialist lawyer to represent us. The approximate cost for this is $15,000 for the initial phase.
We are requesting everyone to help as much as possible by donating funds into the account below. Please write "Defamation" in reference when making your donation.
Private message us your name and email address if you need a tax receipt.
Thank you

It is a great feeling to see the final outcome of the journey from being a victim of exploitation to empowerment and success. I am so glad that these migrants stood together to fight against exploitation and now they can look forward to a better future for themselves and their families. My only request is that you pay it forward by helping others wherever, whenever and however you possibly can. Many congratulations again.

The Labour team in Mt Roskill is getting on the ground to listen to local residents with a series of Community Meet-ups starting in Three Kings on Sat 13 April. We'll be there to listen to you, and hear about what you think is important for New Zealand and the local neighbourhood.
As well as that, we're here to help where we can. If there's a local issue that needs advocacy, or you need help with Council, a government department, or an official document, then come along and we can talk about how best to help.
Each community Meet-up will be for a couple of hours. No appointment is necessary, just come along when suits you. We'll have shelter as well as tea, coffee and snacks. I look forward to seeing Three Kings locals on 13 April and listening to your views (we'll be visiting other local neighbourhoods in the coming months too).
