Personnel from HMS Sultan and the wider region recently came together for the inaugural SULROX competition, a bespoke mini fitness race hosted at the Sultan Sports and Recreation Centre.

Competitors of all fitness abilities took on a gruelling circuit of running and functional workout stations, including ski ergometers, rowing machines, farmers carries, sandbag lunges, burpee broad jumps and wall balls, all against a 60-minute time cap.

The event was designed to give military and civilian personnel the chance to experience competitive functional fitness in a supportive environment, with workout stations chosen for their direct transferability to the Royal Navy's Personal Employment Standard.

Leading Physical Trainer Luke Solomon, who organised the event, said: "The event covered a fantastic range of participants, and the results reflect just how much effort everyone put in across all categories. It was brilliant to see so many people come together and push themselves."

HMS Sultan proudly hosted the Passing Out Ceremony for Survival Equipment Technicians Qualifying Course SETQC 25/001, marking the start of an exciting new chapter for our newest Safety Equipment Technicians.

These talented individuals have completed rigorous training at the Royal Naval Air Engineering and Survival Equipment School (RNAESS), equipping them with the skills to protect and save the lives of Fleet Air Arm aircrew. They now head to their first assignments at Royal Naval Air Station Culdrose and Royal Naval Air Station Yeovilton.

The Survival Equipment Branch has a proud history stretching back to 1943, born out of the need to protect aircrew as aviation technology rapidly evolved. From early parachutes and life preservers to today's cutting-edge helmets, Nuclear Biological and Chemical Defence equipment, and advanced escape systems, the branch has continually adapted to keep pace with modern aviation. The traditions set down by those early pioneers live on in every technician who passes through these doors.

Congratulations to all who passed out. We are incredibly proud of everything you have achieved. Your careers begin now. 🎓⚓

Two siblings. One branch. One proud family.

At HMS Sultan, AB2 Elliott Gover passed out as a qualified Survival Equipment Technician, following in the footsteps of his sister, Petty Officer Emily Gover, who was watching on as an instructor at the very school where she once trained.

Elliott completed the gruelling 29-week course alongside eleven classmates, earning the skills to maintain the life-saving equipment that keeps Royal Navy aviators safe.

He will now join Royal Naval Air Station Culdrose, where Emily herself was recently based before completing her Petty Officer course.

"It's pretty cool. It's great to think we might work together and learn from what she's done. It shows anyone can do it."

For Emily, it was a moment of enormous family pride: "The Navy runs in our family, our dad is ex-Navy, our sister is a medic in the Navy. It's great to see Elliott join the branch (Survival Equipment)."

With two younger brothers potentially waiting in the wings, this really is becoming a family tradition.

HMS Sultan marked Commonwealth Day on 9 March 2026 with a day of events celebrating the contribution of Commonwealth personnel to the Royal Navy. The Quarterdeck was Dressed Ship with flags from all fifty-six Commonwealth nations flying alongside the White Ensign.

The day brought together speakers from Aurora New Dawn, King's Group Academies Gosport Community Hub, the Royal Navy Commonwealth Network, the Naval Families Federation, and Royal Navy Family and People Support, offering Commonwealth personnel and their families information on everything from welfare and immigration support to education and community services.

The afternoon featured a lived experience panel where serving Commonwealth personnel shared their personal stories of service, alongside open networking and a celebration of the diverse heritage that makes HMS Sultan's community so strong.
This year's theme, "Unlocking opportunities together for a prosperous Commonwealth," was very much at the heart of everything. 🌍
