A New South Wales government agency has now racked up more than $1.1 million in penalties for more than a dozen instances of unlawful activity in less than five years, including seven criminal convictions.

It also faces three more criminal prosecutions that could result in up to $12 million in additional penalties, if found guilty, and is under investigation for a further 18 potentially-illegal actions.

That agency is the state government-owned logging company, Forestry Corporation of NSW.

And now a community group has uncovered fresh evidence of illegal logging that experts say is driving endangered species towards extinction, allegations the NSW Environmental Protection Authority (EPA) said it had added to its list of investigations.

"Sea level rise is the greatest long-term impact of the climate crisis and is set to redraw the world map in coming centuries. It has the potential to put scores of major cities, from New York City to Shanghai, below sea level and to affect billions of people."

The study addresses a key question of why current models underestimate the sea level seen in earlier periods between ice ages. Scientists think some ice sheet melting processes must not be yet included in the models. is

Australians could cut their power bills – and carbon emissions – one light bulb at a time as halogen lighting is switched off in homes and offices.

Halogen will be phased out and new standards set for digital signage displays under tougher national standards agreed with industry and announced on Monday.

Longer-lasting LED bulbs use significantly less electricity, won’t burn your fingers like traditional light bulbs, and are widely used for Christmas displays and smart lighting kits.

Since the early 2000s, Australia has replaced about half of its traditional incandescent tubes and bulbs with LED lights.

Swapping the final half could save $8 billion a year and avoid nearly eight million tonnes of emissions, according to Assistant Minister for Climate Change and Energy Jenny McAllister.

“Calculations show that by switching 10 halogen lamps to LED lamps, Australian families could benefit up to $229 a year,” she said.

Using more efficient, longer-lasting light bulbs required by tougher minimum energy performance standards could save homes and businesses thousands of dollars.

There are better ways to use our native forests.

'The timber poles come almost exclusively from state forests on the Mid North Coast, many of which are likely to become part of the Great Koala National Park promised by the Minns government before the election.'

'Regional and rural electricity distributor Essential Energy is switching to power poles made from a fibreglass and resin composite with a UV coating to boost bushfire resilience.'

'The Australian Energy Regulator approved Essential Energy’s switch at the end of April as part of its five-yearly review, which the electricity company said was in part because a shortage of timber poles is expected over the next five years. At least two other networks across Australia are also increasing usage of composite poles.'

report released on Tuesday details how the big four banks — ANZ, NAB, Westpac and Commonwealth Bank — collectively lent $3.6 billion to fossil fuel projects or companies throughout 2023.

The analysis from environmental advocacy group Market Forces, which focuses on the investments of financial institutions like super funds and banks, details how the four banks have totalled $61 billion in lending to the fossil fuel industry since the signing of the Paris Agreement in 2015

ANZ, NAB, Westpac and CommBank collectively loaned billions to companies such as Santos and Woodside to expand or operate oil, gas and coal projects.

The Driven: 'A group of 16 electric cars plugged into charging stations in Canberra have given a world-first demonstration of their ability to keep the lights on by feeding power back into the grid during a major grid emergency in February.

More than 90,000 customers lost power for more than an hour in February in Victoria when fierce storms tore down some transmission lines and – to the surprise of the market operator – caused the giant Loy Yang A coal fired generator to trip.

Generators and big batteries responded by injecting power into the grid within seconds, helping to stabilise frequency levels within acceptable bounds and preventing a wider outage. At the same time, 16 Nissan Leafs also helped by feeding power back into the grid more than 500 kms away in Canberra, proving their ability to respond to major grid events.'

NSW generates 800,000 tonnes of plastic waste each year.

All Australian states and territories have been taking action on plastics but NSW has been lagging. The NSW government want to get on with it, so public consultation is currently open on the NSW EPA 'NSW Plastics: Next Steps’ paper.

In 2022 NSW began to tackle problematic plastics by phasing out the supply of items such as lightweight plastic bags; plastic single-use cutlery, bowls (without spill-proof lids), plates, stirrers and straws; and plastic micro-beads in some rinse-off personal care products.

EPA: "We need to build on that work by targeting additional problematic or unnecessary plastic items.
We need to come together and act to prevent harm to human health and the environment."

The EPA are asking for your thoughts and ideas on what to do next.

You can provide your feedback by:
a. Completing a short survey on the EPA website
b. Providing a written submission to the EPA.

The NSW Government has announced the Department of Planning and Environment will become two new departments to better deliver on the government’s priorities of addressing energy challenges, climate change, the environment and housing.

From 1 January 2024, the Department of Planning and Environment will be split into two new dedicated entities, the Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water, and the Department of Planning, Housing and Infrastructure.

Labor went to the election with a commitment to taking serious action on Climate Change and addressing the decline in biodiversity.

The Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water brings these key tasks together and will allow the Minns Government to deliver on election commitments and focus on the future of NSW.

The fabulous Tomaree Peninsula Labor branch in NSW has supported our LEAN campaign to develop a strategy for the land sector!
Let's end native forest logging, switch to 100% plantation forestry, reduce emissions, sink some carbon and protect our biodiversity.
Has your branch passed the Climate Clearing and cows motion?

Take the motion to your branch secretary - details below in the comments section. Don't forget to register for our webinar tomorrow night with Ken Henry! Details in the comments below.

Congratulations to all the Central Coast Labor branches that supported this motion.

Today The Guardian reported:

'LEAN has now signed up 294 branches for its push to end native forest logging and broad-scale land clearing, but both policies were omitted from the draft national platform distributed to delegates on Monday.

Felicity Wade, a Lean convener, said 'that means it will take the environmental protection issues to the conference floor in August in Brisbane, despite recognising the platform was “much stronger” on climate and energy than in the past.'

Our Climate, Clearing and Cows campaign branch tally has grown since Monday of course! The motion has been passed at over 300 branches now and the number is still growing.

Great news for the environment. There are over 3,000 Landcare, Bushcare, Rivercare, and Dunecare groups in our state. They do amazing work and they deserve government support - their funding is due to expire in the middle of this year and the Liberals haven’t committed to any future funding.

19/01/2023

A Minns Labor Government will help save koalas from extinction by protecting key habitats and restoring environmental protections torn up by the Liberals and Nationals over the past 12 years.

After 12 years of removing environmental protections, increased rates of land clearing and the ongoing koala wars between the Liberals and Nationals in New South Wales, the protection status of koalas has gone from ‘not threatened’ to ‘vulnerable’ to ‘endangered’, with koalas on track to extinction in NSW by 2050.

Labor’s plan will protect koala habitat by committing $80 million to create an iconic Great Koala National Park on the mid north coast between Kempsey and Coffs Harbour, protecting approximately 20 per cent of the wild koala population in NSW.

Expert scientific advice will be sought to help guide the process to develop a Great Koala National Park. The funding will go towards an important consultation process with all stakeholders that will include an independent economic assessment of the Park’s impact on local jobs and communities.

Under Labor’s plan, the koalas of southern Sydney will also be protected by ensuring the wildlife corridors in Woronora Heights are transferred from Sydney Water to National Parks and Wildlife Services (NPWS). Labor will assess all public land in the area to identify and protect wildlife corridors to link the Heathcote National Park, the Royal National Park and Dharawal National Park, supporting the growth of a newly discovered koala population.

Labor will also use partnerships, planning, cooperation, and the levers of government to:

Complete the National Parks and Wildlife Service ‘National Parks Establishment Plan’ to identify key habitat and wildlife corridors and expand protected areas into the future.
Convene a koala summit with all key stakeholders to review and refocus the NSW Koala Strategy to ensure it is a legitimate recovery plan for koala populations across NSW.
Ensure the statutory review of the Biodiversity Conservation Act strengthens environmental protections, stops run away land clearing, and fixes the biodiversity offset scheme.
Work cooperatively with landowners (public agencies, First Nations, Councils, farmers and other private land holders) to develop ways to protect key habitat through partnerships & investment on all types of land.
Work cooperatively with the Commonwealth Government to meet the objectives of the Threatened Species Action Plan 2022-2032 and the 30 per cent protected areas by 2030 commitment to meet the goal of no new extinctions.
After 12 years of Liberal National Governments, they just don’t get it. They have left these precious animals vulnerable to extinction.

The choice for voters is clear – protecting and saving koalas in New South Wales under Labor – or more koala wars under the Liberals and Nationals.

Quotes attributable to Chris Minns, NSW Labor Leader:

“There is one way to save koalas from extinction in New South Wales – and that is to vote Labor.

“I don’t accept that one of our most loved and iconic native species could become extinct here in just 28 years’ time.”

“We will take the action needed to turn that grim trajectory around.”

“By protecting the places these koalas live, and by working closely with all stakeholders, we can ensure we bring these incredible creatures back from the brink.”

Quotes attributable to Penny Sharpe, NSW Shadow Environment Minister:

“After 12 years, six environment ministers, the weakening of environmental protections and koala wars between the Liberals and Nationals, koalas are now listed as endangered.”

“Koalas can’t afford another government that isn’t committed to their survival.”

“Labor’s plan will start the urgent work needed to recover koala populations in New South Wales.”

Excellent to see NSW Labor standing up to the Liberals latest iteration of the Koala wars.

Under this government the Koala is on track to be extinct within 30 years in NSW.

At every chance they get they cave into the Nations insanity and rollback environmental protections in NSW. There's nothing 'moderate' about them. Only Labor will save our beloved Koalas

The 2022 NSW State Labor conference is fast approaching. This October will be the first in-person NSW conference since 2018, and the last before the 2023 election. This makes it a key moment to help shape the agenda of an incoming NSW Labor government.

LEAN is encouraging branches from across NSW to support three key motions in the lead up to this conference:

*A commitment to establish a Hunter Valley Authority.

*Strong policies to support the electrification of households.

*A recommitment to delivering publicly owned renewable energy in government.

See the link for further details.
