I'm happy to report that it looks like Karl Pallastrini, Anne-Marie Rosen, and myself have been elected to the School Board. I look forward to this new challenge in my life and working with this group of people to bring great results for students, teachers, staff and parents in this very challenging environment.

I want to say thank you to everyone who ran for the School Board. It was an eye opening jump into the political environment for me and I feel honored that I was elected among so many excellent candidates.

Please feel free to reach out to me with ideas, concerns, or suggestions. I am always ready to listen.

I received so much support along the way, thanks to all of you that helped me. I couldn't have done this without you and my community. Now the hard work begins!

I had a very interesting exchange with a CUSD parent that focused on cultural sensitivity and awareness. I thought I would share my perspective on this important and current topic. Thank you to the parent that asked the question:

My professional career for the Federal government has shown me the importance of representing multiple points of view and the necessity to be inclusive. I have personally benefitted greatly from learning about other cultures and religions and I talk often to my children about how rich one's life can be with diversity.

The last few years, I have participated in a number of cultural relevancy workshops and unconscious bias trainings. Much of my work is focused on inclusion and equity. We all have biases that we bring from our own life experiences and perspectives. I agree that without good training and education, diversity can be pushed to the side and feelings can be hurt when it's not intentional, it's just being unaware. I know from personal experience that training in these areas has forced me to confront biases I had no idea that I carried and have discussions that ended in growth.

I think it's important to have discussions with children, starting at a young age, about these issues in meaningful and thoughtful ways. An open dialog needs to take place about race and cultural differences, like religion. This conversation should be more than just checking the box, it should be about bringing out the curiosity of this issue with our students.

Environmental and climate literacy is a priority for me, meaning that every student has the skills to understand, think critically about, and address existing and future environmental issues. We must address climate change at all levels, in all disciplines. The comprehensive impacts of climate change represent the single biggest threat to our students.

We are lucky to live in an award winning school district. While technology plays an important role in success at school, we need to make the outdoors a regular part of every day. Discussions need to happen with students of all ages on the importance of stepping away from screens and getting outside. Students need to understand that having downtime from screens is just as critical as a healthy diet and exercise.

And while today I spent much of the day on line working, I am grateful that we have easy access to one of the most beautiful places in the world.

Can anyone guess correctly what beach I'm enjoying? Free yard sign for the winner!

Look at this cool thing that is happening in our front yard. Volunteer bees have taken residency inside our hollow sculpture. When it gets hot they come out of his mouth!
