DRUG TASK FORCE SEIZES DRUGS, GUNS, SLOTS AND CASH AT MEMPHIS STORES

SHELBY COUNTY, TENN. – The West Tennessee Violent Crime and Drug Task Force served two simultaneous search warrants yesterday at the Shell Food and Fuel located at 3524 Covington Pike and Yale To***co Discount located at 5125 Yale Road, both of the 38134 zip code, pursuant to an investigation.

Agents served a search warrant at Shell Road Food and Fuel after receiving complaints about slot machines and conducting an undercover investigation in which the store paid illegal winnings out of the cash register. Agents seized 3 slot machines along with $4,975.00 in illegal gambling proceeds.

Agents also served a search warrant at Yale To***co Discount after receiving complaints about drugs being sold out of the store and slot machines. After conducting an undercover investigation in which the store paid illegal winnings out of the cash register, Agents seized 5 slot machines, two ounces of the drug known as Khat, two fi****ms, drug paraphernalia and $2,255.00 in illegal gambling and drug proceeds.

Upon searching the stores, Agents developed further probable cause to apply for and receive a search warrant to search a home located in the 9000 block of Pepper Hollow Court in Cordova. There, Agents seized over a kilogram (Approximately 2.5 lbs.) of Khat, a money counter and $91,096.00 in illegal gambling and drug proceeds.

“We’ll shut down big drug trafficking operations wherever we can,” said D.A. Mulroy. “And we fought for years in court to get illegal gambling machines out of Shelby County - - we’re not backing down now.”

“Khat is an evergreen type shrub native to East Africa and the Arabian Peninsula that is a stimulant similar to co***ne or methamphetamine. It is classified as a schedule I controlled substance in Tennessee making the possession of any amount, a felony. It is a rare drug that I’ve only encountered a half dozen times in my career and I commend our Agents and those assisting on a job well done for the citizens of Memphis and west Tennessee.”

- Johnie Carter, Director.

Agents are still investigating and arrests are expected soon. Agents were assisted in the investigation by the D.E.A. Memphis Office and the Tennessee Dangerous Drugs Task Force. The office of the 30th Judicial District Attorney of Steve Mulroy will be prosecuting these cases.

The West Tennessee Drug Task Force would like to officially welcome our newest officer, K9 Special Agent Max!

A full blooded Belgian Malinois, Max was born on June 4, 2021 and is celebrating his 5th birthday TODAY while also starting his new job.

Max will be assigned to the VCIF team in the 29th District of Dyer and Lake Counties.

Max’s qualifications include but are not limited to:

- Expert vehicle inspections (especially if toys are involved)
- Advanced odor detection capabilities
- Unlimited energy
- Zero respect for personal space
- Willingness to work for toys and belly rubs.

When asked why he wanted to find drugs for the task force in exchange for toys and belly rubs, Max responded, “Woof.” He certainly said a mouthful there. Our Director is still reviewing that statement but he was heard growling from his office shortly after. 🤷🏻‍♂️

Please join us in welcoming K9 Special Agent, Max to the Drug Task Force team and wish him a happy birthday. We look forward to his service, dedication, and occasional supervision and judgement of his handler from the back seat.

Happy 5th Birthday, Max, and welcome to the West Tennessee Drug Task Force! 🎉🐕🚔🐾

ON DUTY CITY WORKER ALLEGEDLY SELLING GRASS INSTEAD OF CUTTING IT

In the early morning hours of 5/29/26, Agents from the 28th Judicial District out of Brownsville served a search warrant in the 200 block of Sunlyn Ave.

This investigation began months ago when Agents began receiving complaints of a City of Brownsville employee allegedly selling narcotics while on the clock with the city.

Earlier this week, a Brownsville Police Officer conducted a traffic stop on the suspect after work hours and recovered nearly an ounce of ma*****na and associated paraphernalia for resale.

During the search warrant served by the Task Force this morning, Agents caught the suspect in a city work uniform getting into his truck to go to work. Agents recovered approximately 340 grams (3/4 lb.) of individually packaged bags of ma*****na for resale along with a set of digital scales from the employee’s personal vehicle and $1,553.00 in suspected drug proceeds from the suspect’s pockets. Agents also recovered additional ma*****na, scales and baggies from inside of the Sunlyn Ave residence.

One male was arrested and is being charged with possession of schedule VI with intent to sell and possession of drug paraphernalia.

The City of Brownsville was aware of the investigation and cooperated fully with Agents. Agents were assisted in the investigation and warrant service by the Brownsville Police Department and charges are being prosecuted by The Office of the District Attorney General, 28th Judicial District of Frederick Agee.
