Yao traditional leaders say preparations for this yearā€™s Chiwanja cha Yao Cultural gathering, scheduled for October 10, 2026 in Salima District, are nearing completion.

Senior Chief Chowe, Secretary of the Chiwanja cha Yao Council, says this yearā€™s gathering will focus on addressing rising cases of child marriage in areas where the Yao community is found.

Chowe says the gathering will also discuss ways of improving girlsā€™ access to education, particularly those facing challenges in accessing financial and other support to remain in school.

Meanwhile Child rights activist Memory Ngosi has welcomed the focus, but says the gathering should go beyond discussions and result in concrete action to reduce child marriages and promote girlsā€™ education.

Ngosi says other communities can borrow a leaf from the Yaoā€™s efforts to develop strategies against child marriage, urging leaders to turn discussions into practical measures that protect girls and keep them in school.

A record number of people in Yemen are unable to meet their food needs as conflict intensifies in the country, the World Food Programme said on Friday.

Within a few weeks, three in four households in government-controlled areas that are accessible to the WFP would be skipping meals, Matthew Hollingworth, the agencyā€™s assistant executive director, told reporters in Geneva via video link from Rome.

The population of government-held areas is estimated at about 10 million.

ā€œThe effect of this latest flare-up of insecurity on the food security situation threatens to be absolutely devastating,ā€ Hollingworth said.
