“Historical Photographs of Flanders” On View in Hampton Bays

From August 3 – 30, the Flanders Village Historical Society is presenting an exhibit of 16 photographs chosen not only for their historical interest, but also for their quality and artistic value. “Historical Photographs of Flanders” can be seen at Hampton Bays Public Library, 52 Ponquogue Avenue, Hampton Bays, NY 11946. A reception will be held on August 10, 2-4 pm.

The timespan of the works ranges from 1872-1963. Three of the photographs were taken by noted photographer George Bradford Brainerd and another by C. Manley DeBevoise. Respected sources such as the Brooklyn Museum, New York Public Library and Suffolk County Historical Society contributed to this exhibit.

This is the third viewing of the exhibit, which was originally displayed in late 2023 at the David W. Crohan Community Center, Flanders. The Town of Southampton had funded the exhibit through a grant. Having received positive feedback on that show and another at Town Hall early this year, the Flanders historical society now hopes to reach an even broader audience in the township.

We are sad to see that the Brewster House, an incredibly important relic of Flanders’ “Boarding House Era”, has now been reduced to rubble and relegated to memory.

About 40 years of neglect under various owners had caused the once grand structure to go from a white (or more accurately blue) elephant, to eyesore, and ultimately to safety hazard.

Many in the community have lobbied for decades to save this property and find a relevant new use - from artist’s housing, a hotel, workforce housing, and a variety of other ideas. Unfortunately, this was just not possible with the resources available at the time to those involved and the neglect had caused the structure to be deemed as unsalvagable.

As a Historical Society, we hope this tragic loss will help inspire us all to work to preserve and maintain the important buildings that form our unique cultural and architectural heritage. We hope that we can work together as a community so that the loss of the Brewster House will be the last of these extremely special and irreplaceable resources to fade to memory.
