Happy Juneteenth from the Coastal Commission! Today, we honor the day when freedom finally reached the last enslaved African Americans, more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation. It is a reminder that the fight for justice and equality never ends.

At the California Coastal Commission, and during this 50th anniversary of the Coastal Act, we remain committed to ensuring our state’s coast is accessible to all people, regardless of ethnicity, economic status, or place of residence.

From sandy shores to thriving wetlands, nature creates space for connection.

This fall, youth from Bayview-Hunters Point and older adults from the Mission YMCA will come together through Waves of Wisdom: Intergenerational Coastal Stewards—a new program made possible by a $50,000 California Coastal Commission Whale Tail Grant.

Together they'll explore beaches, wetlands, and shoreline habitats while building leadership skills, fostering connection, and strengthening community across generations.

Thanks to a message from Karen, a dedicated daily walker, we learned about dangerous discarded fishing line that has harmed seabirds at the Cabrillo Beach Pier.

Her outreach set real change in motion. Our team (California Coastal Commission and California State Parks) partnered with LA City Recreation & Parks to join the CA Fishing Line Recycling Program, and now new recycling stations are installed along the pier.

The difference is already clear:
🧹cleaner walkways
🐦 safer wildlife
🎣a more mindful fishing community

Karen’s photo of a seagull tangled in line (before the stations were added) reminds us why wildlife protection matters. Huge thanks to everyone involved—proof that local voices can spark big environmental wins.

Save the date! It’s 100 days until California Coastal Cleanup Day. 🗓️ Mark your calendars for September 19th and start thinking about who you’d like to invite. Imagine—if we each brought a friend, we’d double our efforts.

Remember your first Coastal Cleanup Day? For many, the hands-on experience is a true eye-opener. Once you are out there saving those habitats from pollution firsthand, it’s easy to see why we have a responsibility to protect our shorelines and watersheds.

We are honored to feature Phyllis Shafer’s plein air paintings for this year’s artwork and gear! Stay tuned over the next few weeks as we reveal more.

Let’s celebrate our beautiful state. This is also a year of celebrating the California Coastal Act, which protects our coastal access, coastal views, and coastal habitats for all to enjoy.

“I have always been amazed by the movement and rhythm seen in large schools of fish as they sway and flow. I wanted to depict a pair of thresher sharks swimming through a school of sardines, showcasing the synchronized movements of the sardines as they escape the nearby predators while still staying in a large group. I painted the fish to follow a unique and dynamic path around the sharks with spirals and dips. Another big goal of this painting was to only use shades of blue paint and little to no black or white in order to show the vibrant deep blues of the ocean to truly replicate the environment these animals would be in.”
