[𝗚𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗿𝗻𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗣𝗿𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝗦𝗲𝗰𝗿𝗲𝘁𝗮𝗿𝗶𝗮𝘁]: The Ministry of Sports and Recreation [M.S.R.] acknowledges recent public discussion arising from an article and audio recording published by the Samoa Observer concerning the hiring of facilities at Malaefatu Park.
The Ministry values public interest in the management and use of Government recreational facilities and welcomes the opportunity to clarify the current position regarding venue hire enquiries for Malaefatu Park.
Following an internal review, the Ministry acknowledges that a staff member erred in the handling of the enquiry, which contributed to opposing public opinion and subsequent public discussion regarding Malaefatu Park.
The staff member involved has expressed sincere apology for the miscommunication and the M.S.R. regrets any confusion this may have caused and is taking appropriate steps to ensure that future public enquiries are responded to with accurate and consistent information.
M.S.R. confirms that no officially approved public hire rates currently exist for Malaefatu Park. To date, the Government of Samoa has not approved or publicly gazetted any schedule of fees or charges specifically for the hire of the park or its facilities. Accordingly, no official public rates are in force for the booking or exclusive use of the park.
Malaefatu Park continues to operate primarily as a public recreational space and remains open to all members of the public, free of charge, during its normal operating hours. Families, individuals and community groups are encouraged to enjoy the park for walking, jogging, exercise, relaxation and other recreational activities consistent with the park's intended public purpose.
Members of the public seeking information about Malaefatu Park, including recreational use, proposed events or future venue bookings, are encouraged to contact the Ministry directly through its official administrative channels. Ministry staff will be available to provide accurate information based on current Government policy and approved operational guidelines.
M.S.R. remains committed to ensuring that all future public enquiries are handled accurately and consistently, and that any future venue management arrangements are transparent, fair, and in the best interests of the public.
