Competing at home, in front of their own families, villages, and the young boxers of the Boxing Samoa Academy, is a privilege and a responsibility. Whatever the results, we are proud of the discipline, courage, and humility with which our boxers represent Samoa.

The Ministry is proud to support this competition through the Sports Development Fund, an investment by the Government of Samoa in giving our athletes the opportunity to compete at a high level on home soil and to bring international boxing to our people.

Our thanks also to Independent Boxing Samoa Inc. and the coaches, officials, and volunteers of the Boxing Samoa Academy, whose work in developing our boxers from the young age groups through to elite level makes moments like this possible.

Yesterday, the Associate Minister and the Ministry met with the Samoa Netball Association to say farewell and wish the team good luck ahead of the Oceania Qualifier in Nukuʻalofa, Tonga.

A netball spokesperson thanked the government for standing with the netball family and for its continued support in growing the sport through funding.

Speaking on behalf of the Minister, the Associate Minister thanked the netball association's management for their hard work in developing the sport. He said government support only works when the association also plays its part — the government's role is to assist, and the sport association's role is to build the game from within.

He also thanked the players and their families for choosing to represent Samoa.

As the team departs for the competition: remember that the Government leaders, Samoa, your families, and your supporters are all behind you. Go well, and make Samoa proud! 🇼🇸🏐

The Ministry of Sport and Recreation wishes to advise the public that Friendship Park, Matagialalua, will be temporarily closed from Thursday, 27 August 2026 until further notice for essential maintenance works.

This closure is necessary to ensure the safety of all visitors and to uphold the quality of the park and its facilities.

We apologise for any inconvenience and thank you for your understanding and cooperation.

𝗙𝗢𝗟𝗟𝗢𝗪-𝗨𝗣 | 𝗪𝗛𝗔𝗧 𝗚𝗟𝗔𝗦𝗚𝗢𝗪 𝗠𝗘𝗔𝗡𝗦 𝗙𝗢𝗥 𝗢𝗨𝗥 𝗦𝗘𝗖𝗧𝗢𝗥

Last month we shared news of Samoa's participation in the 12th Commonwealth Sports Ministers Meeting in Glasgow. A month on, we want to explain what that participation actually delivers — for our federations, clubs, coaches, athletes and communities.

Why it matters that Samoa is in the room

Commonwealth sport policy for the next decade was shaped in Glasgow: governance reform, integrity standards, and an investment framework for small island states. Those decisions are made by the countries present.

Our delegation — Hon. Seuāmuli Letu'uga Fasi Toma (Minister of Sport and Recreation), Fiu Ponifasio (Associate Minister), and Luatua Seumanutafa Semiperive Epati (CEO MSR), supported by the Samoa High Commission to the United Kingdom — carried Samoa's position into those discussions.

What it returns to the sector

🔹 Standards— the safeguarding and integrity commitments reaffirmed in Glasgow are the same ones shaping Samoa's draft Sport and Recreation Bill 2026. Our federations will meet standards recognised across 56 countries.

🔹Recognition— community participation and sport's role in health and the economy are now firmly on the Commonwealth agenda, and in our draft Sector Plan under Pathway for the Development of Samoa 2 (PDS2).

🔹Access— small island states are named in the call for a Commonwealth investment framework. That naming is what opens doors to resourcing, partnerships and technical support.

🔹 Visibility— our athletes and our culture were seen by a global audience.

Representation is not the outcome. It is the opening. The work now is turning it into law, plans and programmes that reach our villages.

Thank you for your kind words. Supporting our paddlers to reach Singapore for the IVF World Sprints 2026 is exactly the work our Ministry is here to do.

Assistance of this kind is delivered through the Sports Development Fund — a Samoa Government fund administered in line with the criteria and guidance of the Government Grants for Sports Development Policy. Its purpose is to help National Sports Associations prepare for and take part in international competition, so that our national sporting teams can proudly represent Samoa on the world stage.

To every paddler carrying our flag this week — you have a nation behind you. Ia manuia le tauvaga and God Bless 🛶.

The Ministry of Sport and Recreation (MSR) welcomes this week's meeting between Team Samoa, the Samoa Association of Sports and National Olympic Committee (S.A.S.N.O.C.), and the Prime Minister and Cabinet, held in the Cabinet Chambers on Wednesday, 12 August 2026, as our athletes returned from the Glasgow Commonwealth Games.

The occasion of thanksgiving offered by S.A.S.N.O.C. President Tuaopepe Jerry Wallwork, and the achievements of gold medalist Seine Stowers and silver medalist John Tafi, stand as a timely reminder of why the Ministry exists: to guide the development, promotion, and sustainability of sport and recreation for the benefit of all Samoa.

The Prime Minister's remarks on expanding opportunities at Tuana'imato speak directly to the Ministry's core mandate — ensuring that national sporting facilities are not only fit to host athletes of Seine and John's calibre, but are also accessible to the everyday young Samoan looking to discover a talent, build discipline, and represent their country one day.

This is the pathway the Ministry continues to invest in: identifying and nurturing grassroots talent, strengthening partnerships with sporting federations and associations, and working alongside experienced figures such as Faumuina Toa'letai David Tua, whose mentorship of our boxers reflects exactly the kind of knowledge-sharing the Ministry seeks to encourage across all codes.

Team Samoa's performance in Glasgow — personal bests, Games records, and podium finishes — is the visible result of a much larger, ongoing effort involving government, national federations, coaches, and communities working together. The Ministry of Sport and Recreation remains committed to building on this momentum, ensuring that today's champions inspire tomorrow's, and that every Samoan village has a pathway to the world stage.
