She signed policies… and watched her family die.

59 DAYS OF CRIME BY THE “ANGEL OF DEATH” NURSE
In just 59 short days at the beginning of 1991, Beverley Allitt — a young nurse at Grantham and Kesteven Hospital (UK) — caused a horrifying series of medical incidents that left 4 children dead and 9 others seriously injured.

Born in 1968, Beverley suffered from Munchausen syndrome — a psychological disorder that leads a person to fake illness in order to attract attention. But instead of only harming herself, once she became a nurse, Beverley began targeting pediatric patients who couldn’t defend themselves.

Taking advantage of her position in Ward 4, which was critically understaffed, Beverley repeatedly administered insulin overdoses or injected air into the bloodstream of young patients. She was always present during sudden medical emergencies, but because she played the role of a “guardian angel,” her actions weren't immediately suspected.

Only when the death rate rose abnormally did a doctor begin to raise questions and request an investigation. Subsequent blood samples showed unusual levels of insulin and potassium, along with multiple unexplained injection marks.

In November 1991, Beverley was arrested. The investigation revealed that she had once claimed to have lost the keys to the medicine cabinet and had hidden nurse records. Several missing files were later found at her home.

Although she denied all allegations, experts testified in court that Beverley showed clear signs of Munchausen syndrome by proxy — a condition where someone harms others to attract sympathy. This is one of the most dangerous forms of psychological disorders.

On May 23, 1993, Beverley Allitt was sentenced to 13 life terms — the highest sentence ever given to a woman in the UK. The judge described her as “a serious danger to society” and “someone who should never be free.”

The media dubbed Beverley the “Angel of Death,” emphasizing the terrifying contrast between the image of a caring pediatric nurse and the reality of a serial killer. She is currently being held in a high-security hospital with no chance of parole.
