With the riding season due to start anytime soon, we are inviting our motorcycling community to a check and test of their knowledge and skill via a BikeSafe workshop with Wiltshire Police.

BikeSafe is a national, police-run motorcycle initiative aimed at working with motorcycle riders in a relaxed environment to raise awareness of the importance and value of progressing on to accredited post-test training.

BikeSafe workshops involve an observed ride with a police motorcyclist or approved BikeSafe observer from IAM or RoSPA.

With some local variation, BikeSafe workshops aim to cover: Rider attitude, systematic methods, collision causation, cornering, positioning, overtaking, observation, braking, and hazard perception.

John Hutchings, who is the force lead for BikeSafe said: “Whilst BikeSafe isn’t a training programme for riders, it does help provide detailed sessions on hazard awareness, how to make your motorcycling safer and culminates in an on-road observed ride.

“We’ve been offering the scheme for over 20 years for riders of all ages and experience and we continue to receive really positive feedback from attendees.

“Ultimately, as a police force, it is our aim to keep Wiltshire’s roads as safe as possible. Any fatality or serious injury collision on our roads is one too many, and we see the devastation fatal and serious road traffic collisions can leave behind for the rider or driver’s family and friends.

“We are committed to improving road safety for all and BikeSafe is a proven system to assist in upskilling riders to better negotiate the hazards on our roads.”

The cost for a workshop this year has been lowered to £78 nationally, however, if you book any date in the diary for this year, you can currently take advantage of a discounted price courtesy of funding by National Highways.

By using the code SW49 on payment, the workshop fee can be reduced down to only £49. Booking must be made by 31st March but can apply to any workshop this season.

The first workshop of the year will be held on March 8th and we have 16 places available on that date, so grab one while you can!

🐟 Devizes Canal Fish Deaths - Latest Update (20th February)

Many of you have contacted me following the very distressing reports of dead and distressed fish along the Kennet & Avon Canal in Devizes.

I have now received a further update from the Environment Agency about what has happened and what comes next.

➡️ Around 1,000 fish were sadly lost, with approximately two miles of canal affected after low oxygen levels were detected earlier this month alongside a visible oily sheen on the water.

Environment Agency officers attended quickly, installed emergency aerators to improve oxygen levels, and worked closely with the Canal & River Trust - who have since arranged specialist contractors to remove the dead fish and have now taken over ongoing monitoring and aeration of the canal.

🧪 What caused this?

At this stage, there is still no confirmed single cause.

Tests have ruled out algal toxins as the source, and while further laboratory tests are continuing, it is increasingly possible that a definitive cause may not be identified - something which, understandably, is frustrating for everyone involved.

The Environment Agency, Canal & River Trust and Wessex Water are continuing to work together to investigate the incident and prevent anything similar happening again.

I know how much the canal means to residents, walkers, boaters and anglers across Devizes and the surrounding villages. I will continue to stay in close contact with all agencies involved and will update you again as soon as further results are available next week.

If you notice pollution or distressed wildlife, please report it immediately to the Environment Agency incident hotline on 0800 80 70 60.

Urgent gas works are currently taking place on the A350 at Beanacre, and two-way manually controlled traffic lights are currently in operation.

At this stage, we do not know how long the work will take to complete, but we are working closely with Wales & West Utilities to ensure they are completed as quickly as possible.

Please allow extra time for your journeys.

We apologise for any inconvenience caused.
