I recently had the opportunity to talk with 13 On Your Side about the work local election officials are doing right now to prepare for the 2026 election cycle, including the ongoing need for election workers.

Our election workers play a critical role in ensuring elections are administered fairly, accurately, and transparently. They come from across the political spectrum and serve their neighbors on Election Day.

If you’ve ever wondered how elections actually work or how you can be part of the process, you can find out more at: www.miottawa.org/workelections!

🚨 SCAM ALERT 🚨

Our office has recently been contacted by several residents who have received scam calls about allegedly missing jury duty.

Scammers are impersonating law enforcement, claiming to be from the Ottawa County Sheriff’s Office and stating that the victim missed jury duty and now has a warrant.

The scam callers then demand payment to avoid arrest.

⚠️ THIS IS A SCAM.

The Ottawa County Sheriff’s Office will NEVER:
• Call you and demand payment to avoid arrest
• Ask for money through Cash App, gift cards, kiosks, or wire transfers
• Threaten immediate arrest over the phone
• Request payment for warrants or fines without official court documentation

💡 Protect Yourself:
• Hang up immediately if you receive a call like this
• Do not send money or provide personal information
• Verify claims by calling the agency directly using an official phone number
• Report suspicious calls to local law enforcement

Scammers rely on fear and urgency. Take a moment, slow down, and verify before you act.

Ever wonder what your Ottawa County elections team is doing in the middle of winter?!

Election planning happens all year long.

February 13 is the deadline for local jurisdictions to submit ballot proposal language for the May 5, 2026 election. This is a key step in the process and allows our team time to review, prepare, and administer the election accurately and transparently.

The May election is an important one for voters, particularly for school district and local millage proposals that directly impact our communities.

You can always see what will be on your ballot, and learn more about how elections work in Ottawa County at www.miottawa.org/elections

Planning early helps ensure elections are secure, accurate, and ready long before voters head to the polls.
