The Town of Yorktown and the Yorktown Police Department are aware of not only the frustrations, but also the very real and valid safety concerns being expressed by community members regarding the increasing use of e-bikes and scooters throughout town.
Please know that our officers are actively engaging with riders throughout the community to address concerns, encourage safer behavior, provide guidance, and intervene when dangerous situations are observed. At this time, however, many of these riders are not currently violating existing ordinances, as this technology and its rapid adoption have outpaced many local regulations.
Town staff and the Yorktown Police Department are currently working to develop preliminary guidance, educational resources, and potential policy considerations to help provide clearer expectations for riders, parents, motorists, and the community as a whole. We ask for patience as those conversations continue.
Parents and guardians carry a vital responsibility in this conversation. E-bikes can be very dangerous when operated near roadways and pedestrians. Parents MUST ensure that children understand and follow basic traffic safety expectations before using these devices: obey all traffic signs and signals, remain aware of their surroundings, no weaving through traffic, never enter roadways without looking and yielding appropriately, and stay off phones or other distracting devices while riding.
Drivers on roadways, everyone should remain alert and aware. Safety always begins with attentiveness and caution from drivers of motor vehicles. While riders also have a responsibility to operate safely and responsibly, unsafe or unpredictable riding behavior does not remove the obligation for motorists to remain cautious and aware when encountering potentially hazardous situations, environments, or individuals near or on roadways.
We appreciate the community continuing to communicate concerns and observations as we work toward practical and balanced solutions. Additional information and updates will be shared as soon as possible.
