About Naloxone/Narcan

Naloxone is a medication that can reverse an overdose that is caused by an opioid drug. When administered during an overdose, Naloxone blocks the effects of opioids on the brain and restores breathing within two to three minutes. Naloxone has been used safely by medical professionals for more than 40 years and has only one function: to reverse the effects of opioids on the brain and respiratory system in order to prevent death. As of August 1, 2023, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved three naloxone products for over the counter (OTC) use. As of September 2023, Naloxone is now available over the counter.

Public Health Issue: there’s a dangerous, extensively drug-resistant Salmonella outbreak from Rosabella Moringa powder capsules. Those who got sick had purchased it from Amazon or other online retailers. The outbreak is small thus far (seven people, three hospitalized). But typically Salmonella can be treated with antibiotics, and this is a drug-resistant strain that cannot be treated with first-line antibiotics.

What this means for you: If you have a bottle that expires in 2027, check its lot code on the bottom of the bottle. If it’s one of the 52 affected lot codes, toss it.

Info about an extensively drug-resistant Salmonella outbreak linked to moringa powder capsules.
