Peace Officers Memorial Day

Today, Friday May 15th, marks a solemn and significant conclusion to National Police Week (Peace Officers Memorial Day). Since 1962, this day has been designated by Congress to pause and pay tribute to the local, state, and federal law enforcement officers who have made the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty.

Today, we hold space for the families- the survivors-who have lost loved ones, and we honor the memory of those who laid down their lives to protect our communities. We also extend our deepest gratitude to the dedicated officers currently serving, who continue to place themselves in harm’s way with courage and integrity.

To those we have lost: We remember you. We honor you. Your legacy will never be forgotten.

Let us carry the spirit of service and sacrifice with us today and always.

Incident

Today Sheriff Ballinger and Sergeant Broome was responding to a suspicious person call. Once on scene both Sheriff Ballinger and Sergeant Broome were stabbed by the suspect. Both the Sheriff and Sergeant were transported to Wooster Community Hospital, with Sergeant Broome being life flighted to Akron City Hospital. The suspect is in custody.

Both Sheriff Ballinger and Sergeant Broome have been released from the hospital and is recovering.

The Sheriff's Office would like to thank everyone involved at the scene and the community outpouring of thoughts, prayers, calls, stopping in the office all wanting to help in some way. It is truly appreciated by all of our staff.

**Scam Alert**

The Wayne County Sheriff's Office has received several reports of scam calls. The scammers are calling individuals stating they are Lieutenant Richard Cummings and Officer Reed from the Sheriff's Office and could bond out an inmate. The amounts of bond have varied from $1,000.00 to $3,500.00. It appears that whomever is doing the scamming targets specifically anyone that has been arrested for domestic violence. They are contacting their family member somehow and informing them that they can bond out their loved ones by taking electronic forms of payment for the bonds using Venmo and Cash App and coming from phone numbers 330-654-6864 and 330-287-5750.

The Wayne County Sheriff's Office does not employ a Lieutenant Richard Cummings or an Officer Reed. Our office will never contact a family member regarding bonding out an inmate or ask for any kind of electronic forms of payment to bond anyone out. If you receive a call or text and feel it is a scam please contact the Wayne County Sheriff's Office.

National Corrections Officer Week

This week the Wayne County Sheriff's Office honors the men and women who work behind the walls to keep our facility safe and secure. Often working out of the public spotlight, these officers keep our correctional facility secure and work to ensure the safety of both staff and inmates.

Dalton Pre-Prom

Dalton High School students will be participating in pre-prom activities called "Please Return on Monday" next week. Students will have challenges to participate in including impaired driving goggles, distracted driving glasses and seatbelt speed challenge. This event is hosted by Safe Communities of Wayne County, Wayne County Sheriff's Office, Ohio State Highway Patrol, S.A.D.D. and Western Reserve Group Insurance of Wooster.
This is a great opportunity for students to promote awareness and safety during prom season.
