Why I am running for HA?

I am running for a position on the board of the Winthrop Housing Authority because I am passionate about working on issues related to housing instability and I know the important role the WHA has in providing the most vulnerable populations in our community access to save, affordable housing. For the past 11 years, I have worked as a housing advocate for HomeStart, Inc. assisting low income households in Boston facing eviction for non-payment of rent to stabilize their tenancies and avoid likely becoming homeless. Over these years, in addition to the amazing experience of being able to help families avoid the trauma homelessness causes, I have also developed a thorough understanding of state funded public housing rules and regulations. Through my continuing work in this field, I am able to stay regularly informed of changes and updates to those policies. Unfortunately, in the course of my work at HomeStart and, prior to that, at a homeless shelter, I have seen the devastating effects that homelessness and housing instability can have on people's lives. I am committed to working to help as many people as possible secure their right to a safe place to call home and this is what I have dedicated my career to working on. I believe my experience makes me uniquely qualified to serve on the board of the WHA and it would be a privilege to use that experience to help carry out it’s mission.
