Hazardous Weather Outlook:

A line of thunderstorms is expected to move through north and
central Georgia this evening and into the overnight hours. A few
of the thunderstorms could be severe and capable of producing
damaging wind gusts, large hail and a few tornadoes.

Tonight, showers and thunderstorms are expected before 4am, then showers likely and possibly a thunderstorm between 4am and 5am, then a chance of showers and thunderstorms after 5am. Low around 61. Southwest wind 10 to 15 mph, with gusts as high as 25 mph. Chance of precipitation is 100%. New rainfall amounts between a quarter and half of an inch possible.

Although currently Oglethorpe County is only at a slight risk for hazardous weather, please be mindful that weather conditions are largely unpredictable and could change for the worse or for the better.

On Saturday, March 30th, 2024, Oglethorpe County Fire & Rescue graduated their 2024-1 Recruit Class of Volunteer Suppression Firefighters. The Recruit Class started in January and consisted of 10 weeks of classroom instruction and skills proficiency training. The class finished with 19 firefighters participating in their Live Burn Training. Of the 19 new firefighters, 13 were from Oglethorpe County and 5 were from Madison County.

Over the past 10 weeks, all students displayed integrity, discipline, and perseverance. These firefighters dedicated over 120 hours of their personal time to become volunteer firefighters, which is often thankless job.

Oglethorpe County Fire Rescue and 10-19 Training would like to thank Athens-Clarke County Fire and Emergency Services for allowing us to use their facilities free of charge. We would also like to thank all of the GFSTC Georgia Firefighter Standards and Training Council Instructors who dedicated a Saturday to lead our recruits in their Live Burn. Without their support, our recruit class would not have been as successful as it was!

SEVERE WEATHER WARNING

The US National Weather Service Peachtree City Georgia has issued several hazardous weather warnings for Oglethorpe County, as well as surrounding counties due to a storm system that is approaching from the west.

As of the 11:30AM briefing, the NWS is predicting severe thunderstorms with rainfall amounts of 2-4" expected this evening through Saturday night with isolated higher amounts possible. We are also expected to see damaging winds and/or brief tornadoes early Saturday morning with more gusty winds expected to come in behind the storm system late Saturday into Sunday. This will increase the potential for downed trees and powerlines.

There is a Flood Watch in effect from March 8th at 7:00PM until March 10th at 01:00AM.

During the storm, please exercise extreme caution while driving and stay alert for public safety personnel working to keep roadways open.
