A treat in Shortstack today - a current bestseller! Gabrielle Zevin‘s incredible Tomorrow and Tomorrow and Tomorrow! One of the best books I’ve read all year - come snag this New York Times bestseller! It was an utterly engrossing joy and I can’t wait for someone else to read it for the first time!

Last week’s was John Steinbeck’s The Grapes of Wrath, an incredible tale of the American Diaspora during the Great Depression and through the dust bowl. It toggles between the story of the Joad family’s migration and interstitial chapters that show slices of life across the country.

Steinbeck’s classic is taught across the country, but has also been a lightning rod for censorship. The Grapes of Wrath was BURNED by the East St. Louis school district in 1939 and has since been challenged as recently as 1993 in AL, CA, IA, NC, NY, MO, SC, TN, VT, Canada, Ireland, and Turkey.

The Grapes of Wrath is still available in Shortstack - feel free to swing by and read this classic novel today!

For yesterday’s , we snagged another copy of part two of the incredible Pulitzer Prize-winning graphic novel Maus by Art Spiegelman. Maus was banned in Tennessee’s McMinn County in January of this year (2022).

This novel details a father’s journey through N**i occupation, life in a concentration camp, and the subsequent reverberation for generations of his family. I first read this book (Parts I and II) in high school, and it remains a staple of my graphic novel collection. Swing by Shortstack today to read this newly hard-to-find book. Be sure to pass it on for someone else or to return it.

No cover? No problem! ? It’s Holes, the celebrated youth novel by Louis Sachar! Holes, you may ask? Like the movie starting Shia LaBeouf? Correct - but way better! Holes won the 1998 U.S. National Book Award for Young People's Literature and the 1999 Newbery Medal. In 2012, it was ranked number six among all-time children's novels in a survey published by School Library Journal. Don’t judge a book by its (lack of a) cover - come and pick up this modern classic today!
