Hello all, I just wanted to put the road conditions into perspective for everyone. We haven’t experienced this in a while. The 5”-7” of snow that most of us enjoyed is great but not the colder temperatures afterwards. It was so easy to drive on and that created a lot of traffic. This compacted it into a 2”-3” ice cap glued to the road surface, with a powder coating on top of that. It’s like pushing concrete. The county’s road salt doesn’t have the chemicals added because of the extra expense. Our salt has a melting point of 15 degrees or above, if you’re lucky. Road salt without the calcium chloride added is $112 per ton, just ordered 300 ton yesterday to replenish our stock pile. This most likely will arrive tomorrow. We’ve never been out of salt and we still have a good stockpile for the future. On the plowing situation, we have been using road graders to break that “ice cap” to allow thawing, snow plows do next to nothing without that thawing in these conditions. I want to thank everyone for their patience and understanding but most of all I want to thank our employees who have been eager and at the same time agitated because of these conditions. We’re all wanting to get these roads cleared for y’all.

Efforts were made to clear roads today and yesterday. They have been a wash after the latest band of snow that passed over the County a few hours ago. We have sent our crews home for the day because it would create a terrible situation to apply salt before sun down due to extremely low temperatures. We will continue to work on the roads tomorrow, but with the low temperatures we don’t expect to make too much progress. We ask that you only travel if necessary and please stay safe out there.

The snow has made many of our roads slick and road conditions are deteriorating. The county highway department and state highway department are working diligently, but many secondary roads will likely remain slippery.

Please avoid driving unless necessary. The roads will likely worsen if we get the snow that is forecasted in the next two hours. Please be safe!!!
